“In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”
—Michelangelo
Was lucky enough to see David my junior year of high school. Gave me a tremendous appreciation for sculptures, not to mention the skill and genius of artists during the Renaissance. Would love to go back to Florence and view David again, along with all the other amazing art work at the Uffizi Gallery and else where.

Ok I know its heresy to say but once you’ve seen one Greco-Romano Statue you’ve pretty much seen them all, David is special I know but in this case the setting is just as important as the jewel. Florence one of the prettiest places I’ve been to and swims in the Maciavellian decadence of the Medici period which you can still almost taste (however try to go at low tourist season). Saying that in a way I was almost more impressed by the copy in the Pizza De Vechio just for where it was.

Yes Sir.
Just seeing how large his hands and head are in proportion to the rest of his body.
Grrrreat!

i read michelangelo buonarroti’s biography when i was 15, it was mandatory reading at my highschool.
when i was 21 i backpacked through italy in trains.
ever since reading the book, i wanted to see david.
my dad told me “you know, he is quite a disappointment. and small too!”
when i got there i was in awe. it was perfect. just perfect. and incredible. the first anatomically perfect statue. (thanks to MB’s nights of body snatching and field surgical procedures…:)
i called home totally excited (and pissed), and told my dad “what was that BS?! it’s incredible!!!”
can you imagine what he said? that great great man?
he said “of course it is. i just didn’t want you to have such high expectation so that you will get disappointed.”
