In high school one of my friends stole a dictionary from a classroom and hid it in his locker for months. It was a pretty lame prank until it started appearing in different people’s lockers. We all ended up passing it from one person to another throughout the school year until nobody was sure who had even taken it in the first place. I know one of us took it home at graduation but I don’t know which one.

    too big... 2 years ago

    apparently mines a ‘pocket’ edition.
but its the roughly the size and shape of a brick.
seriously thats not going in my pocket.

how come you don’t have one already?

And, while I own a copy, I use the online version much more often. If you don’t have a subscription through a university or employer, consider buying yourself a subscription rather than buying a print copy.

I will admit that owning a book that you have to use a magnifying glass on (because of the microprint) is kinda cool, but practical, it isn’t.

Where to get this: 3 years ago

    E-bay.

You want the compact unabridged edition. I think it’s got a date of ‘88 or ‘89, unless memory fails. If you’ve got the unabridged OED and Johnson’s dictionary, do you really need anything else?

Worth whatever you pay for it.

    Buy it! 3 years ago

I used mine a lot during the A-levels. It’s rather useful, but not a full version. Plus, being English it has the English spellings. It was the second book to go on the pile of things to take to Uni with me (the first being my German dictionary…)
