I need to learn how to swing dance by this coming weekend. Or at least well enough to pass anyway. I’m going to the dance for WWII weekend in Gettysburg so I really should hurry up and practice. Its so difficult for me to get the hang of though!

The classes I took were fun but I failed to finish them. I found it hard to learn how to dance to a dance that required so much from the lead. Which made it incredibly difficult when the leads didn’t do what they were supposed to. Although they said in the class that you should never learn to dance with one person I think it really would be ideal to take this class with a partner. Someone you could feel comfortable and critiquing also someone to practice with at home. I would definitely love to try this again but only with a partner.

Swing dancing is so much fun! You should definitely give it a try. I learned how in the mid-90s with a bunch of good friends. Now any time we’re at a wedding or somewhere with a dance floor, we can whip out our swing skills and dance. I always thought when you see people swing dancing in movies that it was totally unrealistic that anyone could dance that way in real life without a routine, but it’s all about following your partner’s lead (if you’re a woman), or leading your partner (if you’re a man.) I do think our generation lost something when people stopped “partner dancing”. That’s why I’m glad swing has had a revival. Aside from being a lot of fun, the music is great, too!

when my kids are a little more grown-up, after I talk my husband into taking it with me, and when I can actually find a local instructor.
I really didn’t enjoy the other people taking the classes or my teacher. Besides, how often does the occasion arise for you to actually swing dance?
My swing dancing skills are pretty weak, but I love every style of dance. West Coast, East Coast, Triple Time, they’re all amazing in their own respect.

i played in a jazz band in high school and we have a swing dance every year. this past year, i invited a friend of mine from my orchestra to go with me (something no one does; i’m quite sure i was the only one who had brought a date). it turns out he was excellent at swing-dancing, and taught me a bit. swing dances are more fun if you actually get out there and dance instead of just standing around.
also, we almost won the dance competition at the end, but there were these old people who were awesome at swing-dancing.

I had a terrible experience with my first ever attempt, as although I went with a friend of mine, we were split up and I had to dance with random guys about 30 years older than me, it was very awkward.
Even so, I would love to be able to learn properly with one dance partner.
Plus I wear shiny toed black swing/brogue shoes as everyday wear anyways, so this should be a natural progression :)
