Help victims of Hurricane Katrina

Went down to Slidel with Operation Blessing (A great organization- check them out!) spring break of last year. An amazing and unforgettable experience. I really hope I’ll be able to go again. It feels like we should talk about Katrina more these days because everyone has seemed to forget. And things are still not great down there..

Gutted! 19 months ago

Gutted I am removing this of my list, but the big move to work in America and help out in New Orleans is on hold for bnow due to the new hitch but I wonder if there’s any other way of helping out besides building and physical labour???

next year, this might be all systems go again.
I hope so…

amazing 20 months ago

i just got back on saturday from spending a week down in mississippi building a house for a family that my youth group and school found and helping out with other families in the area and it was the best experience of my life (so far). It feels so weird being back home now, i just want to go back!

i also spent some time in new orleans over my spring break
and it just makes me so upset seeing how everything is still so bad…specially the 9th ward

something needs to be done

For three months, I lived and worked in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward, tearing down ramshackled places, selling building supplies for cheap, and helping to rebuild lives.
For another three months, I lived and worked in Biloxi Mississippi, helping the Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army, and working with Hands On Gulf Coast.
It feels great to be a part of it all. I really have dedicated a large portion of my life and time to helping victims of widespread natural disasters!

I’ve been down twice, once to Lafayette and year later to Pass Christian. It’s amazing that in the year that passed between the times that I was there, almost nothing got done. I plan on going again in another year, and I hope that by that time more will have happened.

Bay St. Louis relief 2 years ago

I’ve gone on two separate trips (each a week long) down to Bay St. Louis Mississippi for hurricane relief. The last trip was summer 07, it’s still really bad down there. There is only about one third of the population thats come back (or less). I stayed at Camp Coastel in Kiln county which is a volunteer camp for workers who come down to help. The people are so grateful for any help that they get,it’s an eye opening experience.
btw-the picture is from New Orleans when we went the last day of the trip.

I went to New Orleans on a service trip for Spring Break with about 30 kids and teachers from my school. We split up into 3 groups each working on one house. We stayed at Camp Hope in St Bernard Parish. It was probably one of the most amazing and heart breaking experiences of my life, and when I came home the change in me was evident from the moment I stepped into my house (or at least according to my dad). It definetly helped me grow into a better person and I’d give anything to do something like this again.

Donation 2 years ago

I sent a donation shortly after the hurricane. I wish I could have done more, like hosting a family or going to New Orleans to help with the clean up. The news today shows that people still need help following this disaster.

I went with a group of students at my university to New Orleans during spring break. We painted someone’s house and gutted another (that hadn’t been touched since the storm). It’s amazing to see the work that still needs to be done and how everyone is dealing with the aftermath of the storm.
