Currently an EMT-I in Atlanta, GA. Got my license in January, 2009. My (current) main goal is to work 911 as a paramedic in Boston. :) At least I’m on my way!
How I did it: It was a very long year with lots of late nights and lots of working long shifts making up for the days I took off for school. I put around 35,000 miles on my car driving to and from school. My family had to deal with a lot of time away from me. In the end, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the best paramedic school in the state of Georgia, passed National Registry on the first try and made 16 friends. :-)

I came across a grant to help pay for EMT’s working in Rual areas to become Paramedics. I brought this up with my Capt. and he told me that our dept. is a member with this organization, and that this was the grant used to put some of the current EMT’s into Paramedic school. Once I’ve been at my dept. for six months (a prerequsite for the grant), I can speak with my capt. about applying for the grant and having the county cover what the grant doesn’t. It to soon to tell right now, but I’ve already been with the dept. for over 3 months, so in another 3, if our budget is up to it, I may be able to apply and get all of my school paid for. Or, at least 2/3 of the cost covered if I get the grant and the county wants me to get my cert., but doesn’t have the money to pay the rest. Either way, 2010 seems to deffinately be the year I will be able to start Paramedic School!

I’m currently a FF/EMT, working for a Fire Rescue Dept. There is a good shot of having my Paramedic school paid for by my employer and I’ve decided that becoming a Paramedic is a serious goal of mine, and that it is necessary to get the most out of my career. Tomorrow, I’m going into work and asking my Chief if the dept. will be willing to pay for my school. We’ll see were this goes.
I got in! I received a letter from the school a couple of days ago saying I can start studying there this fall! I’m happy! If I like the studies and everything goes fine I should soon be well on my way to accomplishing this goal.
My parents and grandparents keep telling me that being a pramedic is a very tough job that you probably can’t go on doing until you retire, and that the pay isn’t very good either. I know that but I don’t mind. I really want to help people in real emergencies and I think I would be good at the job.
I’d LOVE to become a paramedic one day and actually do it for a living. I’m at the point where I’d quit teaching to do it. I had a wonderful time working at the Fire Dpt. It would be great to do it full time some day. I’m 5 weeks away from completing the EMT-Basic, and I’m definitely wanting more.

Ever since I became a EMT-Basic, I was hooked. And I want nothing more than to become a paramedic. If not for the opportunity to serve as a public health rescuer, or the opportunity to give back to the community, then to finish at least to say I finished something. Good luck to everyone who is doing this as well. I’m in the second half of my advanced Paramedic Academy program, and will be done by August.
Im not sure what put the idea of becoming a paramedic in my head but im dead set on going to uni in a couple of years time and doing my degree in paramedic science
