I keep telling my husband that I hate having the TV on so much. We don’t have cable so that helps but we have a habit of putting PBS on in the morning for my daughter and just leaving it on throughout the day. Whenever I say I don’t like her watching cartoons so much, my husband responds with something along the lines of, “But she’ll be bored. What is she supposed to do?” But I’ve been making a point of turning the TV off and playing music after Sesame Street is over. My daughter doesn’t care. She colors and draws, she builds with blocks, she plays with her Carebears, she dances to the music, etc. She does that anyway, really, but now she isn’t distracted by TV - and neither are we. And, to tell you the truth, I think she’s happier with the music. She gets more of our attention and she’s a bit more active and creative. We do turn the TV on again in the evenings - but at least it isn’t on all the time anymore.
