How to read the "Grapes of Wrath"

Entries

It has begun 4 weeks ago

I can tell it has been a long time since I’ve picked up this book. And now I wonder why I’ve disliked it so much before. Steinbeck does a great deal of description of things. At first it’s not obvious that he is writing about the Joad family. But after a couple of chapters, I’m enjoying the rhythm of the writing and the richness of the expression. I can almost taste the dust and feel the heat of that dry Oklahoma. Unlike before, I want to keep on reading to see what happens next.

Now that I’ve completed the 52 books in 52 weeks challenge, I think it’s time to turn my attention to The Grapes of Wrath. I’ve tried to read this book several times and just haven’t managed to get past the first few chapters. But I’m determined to persevere and make it to the end this time.

Grapes of Pain 6 months ago

This book was, without a doubt, the worst collection of words I have ever had the misfortune to read. I was required to do so for my Senior English class, and I suffered through every minute of it, and I assure you it isn’t just because I /had/ to read it. Several of the books assigned to me were great reads, such as The Picture of Dorian Gray, Great Gatsby, and The Importance of Being Earnest. In fact, aside from turning it in, the only good that came out of reading that book was the amusement I got drawing a bunch of glowering grapes on the back of the test for the book. It absolutely astonishes me that the author of this also wrote a book as great as ‘Of Mice and Men.’

i’m almost finished with it. i don’t like it as much as East of Eden, and definitely not better than Of Mice and Men to me, but it’s alright.

The Grapes of Wrath is one of my favorite books. You absolutely must read this if you are from California. Even though it was written 80 or so years ago, I think there are themes relevant to the present.

Stunning 2 years ago

This is Steinbeck’s master piece. The book is absolutely stunning. The writing is beautiful and the story line is extremely moving. The book reads very quickly and takes you away to another time and place. Although the story is set during the depression the struggle of the human spirit to survive is timeless. The last paragraph of this book is probably one of the most moving things I have ever read.

I just finished this two days ago when I got rained into my house for a bit. I had read it last at 14 or 15. Reading it again now at 25 really makes you think more about it. I could see a lot of similarities with the area of rural Paraguay where I live. I highly recommend it. Now I need to read East of Eden.
