I take the test next week. I’ve taken a practice test and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’ve made a few flashcards of words I should know but don’t and look them over whenever I have free moments or have to wait for something. I’m going to review some of the math rules I missed on the practice exam. Other than that, I may take another practice test just to get the rules memorized.
How to take the GREs
How I did it: I've been putting this exam off for 3 years. I can't believe I waited so long. It certainly wasn't a pleasant experience, but at least it's over.
Finally, I signed up for the exam giving myself 3 weeks to prepare, so I wouldn't put it off any more.
I took practice exams, made vocabulary flashcards, and finally just sucked it up and did it. The flashcards weren't directly useful, since none of the words on my cards were on the exam. Understanding the roots, however, was extremely helpful.
In terms of the math section, you're best off if you have long-term memory and can remember math from your sophomore year in high school.
Lessons & tips: Take practice exams. Review the math segments with which you're unfamiliar. Learn roots of words as well as commonly confused words. Learn the directions and format of the test so you're not surprised.
Ultimately, just do it. It's 10th grade level math and vocabulary no one uses. Grit your teeth and get it over with.

I signed up for the GRE tonight! No more excuses; the test is in 3 weeks. I’ll use the pressure to get my butt in gear!
I’ve been putting this off for over a year. I haven’t decided altogether which school I’ll go to, but not taking the GRE’s is definately slowing me down. So now I’m just going to sign up for the general test and use the impending deadline as motivation.
raised to be polite, not to suffer bullshit Life is too short to make just one decision
i took them my senior year of college, thinking grad school wasn’t a completely financially unreasonable hope.
i remember doing pretty well on the test portion and rocking the hell out of the written half of it. maybe one day (before my scores expire), i’ll actually be able to put those scores to use.
although i hate these tests, i did well and am done. wont need to do it anymore. i even am giving my books away to a fellow shadower at the rehab center
got the scores back yesterday from the first time. I did not do terribly. I did above average on the analytical and verbal, not so on the quantitative. I need to start studying for the second time on dec. 16.
i have been studying out of a book for prep in one week. i have over a month, but i cant crack the big book for studying. it is frightening.
I have scheuled November 4 and December 16 to take them. I have the books to study. Just need to get to it.
even though i totally do not agree with standardized testing…i do want to be in grad school by next spring…boo hiss to the GRE’s
A necessary evil if you want to get into a good graduate school. I am lucky that I perform well on standardized tests, as the night prior to my GRE’s I went out and partied like a crazy girl. I went into the test the next morning at 8 AM completely hungover. And when I was done with the general test, I had to stay and take the subject test! Needless to say, I went home and slept for hours. That was when the tests were done with pencil and paper. Now, everything is done on the computer, so it is a little easier. All I can say is good luck!
