watching power of art (simon schama) 8 months ago

awesome! will be reading (and watching) more of his works. Like the fact that he incorporates the historical setting. 1800 victorian england was an incredibly horrible time for the working classes and it puts into light what van gogh may have been thinking…highly recommmended.

I wasn’t able to take another class, but I think this is something that I will actively do as time progresses.

I went to the library to add to my stack of books to read, and picked up books on Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali.

I had to take Introduction to Modern Art last semester for my degree. (I’m a Senior now). I’d never had any art history course before. I went in thinking I was gonna hate it, because come on, Modern Art is kinda weird, haha. BUT, I was incredibly surprised because I loved it! It was always a pleasure sitting in class. And it wasn’t about loving the art, because, while I did like some of it, a lot of it I still don’t like, but learning about it was super interesting!

So, I want to take some more courses. I’ll probably only get one in next semester, but I can still learn about it through books and stuff. Any recommendations?

Where to begin? 3 years ago

I minored in Art History in college and I loved it. I have become more and more passionate about art, especially painting. I just bought a great book by Larousse called Visual History of Art. It seems like a good place to start. It includes Ancient art up to modern day. The only “bad thing” is it is focused on Western art. I would like to learn more about world art, specifically Asian art. Eventually I hope to have a more global perspective. Step by step…

Art history is a glaring gap in my knowledge that I have been meaning to fill for waaay too long. I am thinking of creeping into a 1st year art history class at the university I go to, without registering. I will sit at the back and be mysterious and take in the slideshow & learn by osmosis.
