I just read the newspaper I couldn’t find two weeks ago – better late than never! I was amazed at how much more interested I was and how much more I understood since learning the capitals of the world. The issues of uranium in Iran and the arrest of the Tutsi General seem more real now I know where the countries are.

I’m not doing very well with this. I feel quite stupid when I listen to the news. I wish I understood more about the state of the world.

I read the Times on Saturday, but don’t recall a single piece of news from it. Actually I’m not sure I even looked at the news section, but only read the arts section. I’ll see if I can find the news part.

[edit: I found the news section – I had skipped the entire section in favour of the crossword at the back. Oops]

In primary school we used to have a weekly test on current affairs. I thought the test was called “curranty fairs”...

So… when I was working I’d read the newspapers every day as we had several delivered to work so I’d read them at breakfast and lunch. Now I read the news at BBC online but I mostly click on things which interest me or affect me rather than world issues.

To achieve my goal I am going to listen to the BBC World Service when I’m in my room (I listen to France Culture when I’m online) and hopefully one of my other goals to read history books will help me be more knowledgeable about the world.

The Times 3 years ago

I bought and read The Times today. How intellectual. I am starting to feel more in touch with the world already
