How to finish my Christmas shopping early this year by backontrack

"What a great experience to be able to ENJOY the holidays with my family!"

How I did it: I started making a list as I went through the year of things that people would mention that they liked.   Sometimes it was just an offhand comment.   I also kept my eyes & ears tuned to gift suggestions on the internet, and new things that were coming out.   It didn't take long to figure out what to buy for everyone.   Once I knew what I wanted, I set aside a day to go shopping.   It's so much easier to shop when you know what you want.   You are in and out of the stores in half the time it normally takes.   This year I spent the early part of December WRAPPING the gifts, instead of rushing around looking for them.

Lessons & tips: The best tip that I can offer is to tell you to keep your ears open to little things your family mentions through the year that they like...maybe it's going out for dinner, going to the movies,(gift cards) or staying home and watching a movie on the couch (a popcorn bowl, popcorn, snuggie blanket & gift card for a video rental).   If you stay tuned in, it's not that hard!

    It got done, not particularly early 22 months ago

    But it’s over, and that’s what counts. I may want to rethink my Christmas strategy – I want to make handmade gifts for people but that requires a lot of advance planning, and then when I’m done it seems silly to wait six or eight months to give the gifts. Hmmm. Well, that’s a topic for another goal.

    But, two or three days ahead of time would be better than only one! So I still have a chance to be “early.”

    Decided, but still need to buy/send:
    • FIL (can’t buy just yet)
    • Mom, Dad, 1 bro
    Need to figure out:
    • One more for SIL
    • MIL
    • One more friend

    I’ve decided not to do cards this year, which has reduced the stress level a lot. Also, buying cookies for the company holiday potluck, rather than baking them.

    DH and I went together to Circuit City and a nearby Borders store, and took turns in each store so we could shop for each other, too.

    Completely Done:
    • 4 Friends
    Decided, but still need to buy:
    • FIL’s big gift (will have to wait until a couple days before)
    • One more for DH
    • One more for SIL
    Need to figure out:
    • Mom, Dad, 2 brothers (I have a general idea but need to pinpoint – needs to be done by this Friday)
    • MIL
    • One more friend

    See, there are gifts under the tree now! But the kitties have mangled the bottom half of the tree…

    I found out yesterday that Hanukkah starts on Tuesday night, and I’m totally not prepared (in terms of presents.) Fortunately, since Hanukkah is eight days long, I have next weekend available to remedy the situation. Also… I could do some shopping on the way back from Geology class tomorrow. Assuming I’m not sick enough that I have to stay home from work. :-/

    I am very far behind on the holiday gifts. Since it is clear I will not be able to Have all my Christmas presents ready and Wrapped by December 1, I am changing this goal to “finish my Christmas shopping early this year.” Who knows what early means? But I’m probably aiming for at least a week before I head off to DH’s parents for Christmas.

    I started a list of gift ideas and filled it in with a list of who I need to get a gift for, and any ideas I’ve had to date. It’s far from complete, but having an incomplete list is better than no list at all!

    It helps that Hanukkah is pretty early this year (Dec. 4, I think?) but it will be nice to have everything ready ahead of time for Christmas as well. I’ve had goals like this for the past two years (2 years ago and last year ) but I’ve never been 100% done by Dec. 1. I am going to work hard to make this year different.
