Both the upstairs and downstairs windows have been replaced with very insulated double-pane vinyl windows. In addition, we replaced all the windows in our basement with clear glass block windows which let in more light and are more secure. We used Champion windows, and were more than pleased with the results. Our electric bills went from $600 in 2007 to $450 in 2008. And the new windows are easy to clean (not that I’m much of a cleaner). They also insulate sound much better.
Very happy to have completed this one.
How to replace the windows on our house
How I did it: We did this in stages. The upstairs first, then downstairs, and finally the basement. Each was done 9 to 12 months apart so we could afford it without going into debt. So it took about two years to complete the job. We researched several companies, and found one that gave use a good balance of quality and cost. I'm sure there are lots of good companies out there (as well as some rip-offs), but we were very pleased with the quality of the work as well as the product.
Lessons & tips:
- Visit several showrooms.
- Ask around, get opinions from friends
- Our electric bill went down 25% the first year.
Resources: Champion windows did ours. I'm not sure if they are just local to St. Louis, though. We read Consumer Reports to find out what to look for, and what to avoid.

And is really part of the same goal!
I want very energy efficient ones that look nice!
even though there’s still the one window he forgot to order, which he’ll do in January. He said it’ll only take an hour.
They replaced 10 windows and two storm doors. It took a day longer than he’d said it would, and that’s not counting the day they were snowstormed out. It was more intrusive than I’d expected, and more annoying than it would’ve been in warmer weather. Plus right now I’m high on the sealant fumes, and not the good kind of high. And I can’t open the windows to let air circulate because we’d die of exposure.
But I’m glad it’s done. Should be good for our heating bills, and good for the environment.
and will finish Wednesday. I’ll be so glad when this is done.
yesterday. Now we have to get them stained before Installation Day, which is yet to be determined.
I’m getting bored with this process. Seems like when you’re paying thousands of dollars for a service, you shouldn’t have to motivate the service providers quite as much as you would motivate a five year old to clean up her room.
he’s going to contact me with a date when he’ll drop off the windows. No word yet on when he thinks he might install them, or the storm doors.
I’m sure it’ll be a freezing cold day. Hopefully not in hell, though.
of the windows is supposed to be next week, so we can stain them. Then they’ll return to install them at some point in the future. Probably when it’s 30 below 0 outside.
And I’d hoped to have them before our Halloween party. Hah!
...isn’t really that big of project, but something we keep delay doing. There is a large window in the master bedroom that is single pane and just need to decide if we want to keep the same size window or build a deck and install a french door. The living room has a couple windows that are single pane, but the windows have plantation shutters and will either need to figure out if we can still use them, or buy new ones. Two upstairs bedrooms will need new wood blinds since the interior mounted ones will no longer fit – the blinds will cost more than the windows.
We need to focus on one area at a time or the windows will never get replaced.
