ok so not an official dancer in a ballet or hip-hop troup…..But I can move pretty good for a white girl….so I’ve told a number or times.
in september of 2006, i walked into kerry casserly’s class as a non-dancer. i thought being in musical theatre wasn’t going to be very much dancing. boy was i wrong. for the entire first month of september, i was sore every single day.
kerry pushed me, she didn’t give up on me when i couldn’t even do a jazz run. she helped me when i needed it and let me work it out on my own when i needed that. i loved her, but i hated her class.
but i threw myself into it, i realized that musical theatre was a lot more dancing than i’d originally thought, but it was what i loved, so i put my heart into it, and tried my very best.
by february i’d learned a lot, but i still didn’t like dancing. then i got my jazz runs. finally. after like six months…and it was exciting. but i still didn’t like dancing…but i liked kerry more and more. she would encourage us, and tell us stories about living in new york, and she really just cared about us. and she believed in me. i’d never had someone believe in me before, not the way she did.
in may, i sprained my ankle and started bawling. i realized that the tears weren’t because of the pain, but because i wasn’t going to be able to go to school and dance the next day, and for a long time. i was confused and said to myself “mandy, what the hell. you don’t even like dancing. why are you crying?” and that’s when i realized that maybe i did like dancing.
i didn’t dance all summer, and when fall came, i signed up for the performing arts workshop at lundstrum center for the performing arts. you see, kerry had left my school to work full-time there, and she was the whole reason that i ever started dancing, so i followed her. i started tap dancing and took musical theatre repertoire class at school, and after school i had tap, ballet, and jazz. and kerry would also teach some musical theatre rep. it was hard, but so much fun and i slowly started to fall in love with it.
i stayed in classes until i had to quit because of time conflicts. i had gotten into a show! which was one of the reasons i took dance class in the first place.
and that is where i am now. I miss dance class SO SO SO SO SO much, and i’ve realized that i’m a heck of a lot better at dancing than a lot of the “actors who dance” that are in my show. the choreography isn’t challenging, and i know that is because of all the classes i’ve taken. if i hadn’t worked so hard in my classes, the choreography in my show would be much more difficult for me.
a few weeks ago, a dream of mine came true. I’d been waiting since september of 2006 for it, and it finally came before rehearsal when a fellow cast member said “you’re a dancer right?” and i just looked at him, and smiled and said “yes.” i can’t even express in words how amazing it felt to finally be able to say that. and its all thanks to kerry casserly…
has anyone seen ryhtmic gymnastics? it’s so cool. and they r really flexible. but they look a bit scary when they are! :)

well ever sciince i was a little girl i always whanted to be a dancer.I have been danceing for 6 years
Modern dancing is cool. I love those perfect cartwheels and splits. I’m nearly as good. But I really want to be a dancer when I grow up!!!For reasons:
1. Dancing is fun and a great way to keep fit.
2. You can learn new skills.
I do gymnastics, but maybe dancing would be just as cool as gymnastics!!!
