I wish I had a chicken! As long as me and my fat self, doesn’t eat it

I’ve had a pet chicken, a Silkie-Blue Cochin mix named Jenna, for over ten years. She is a little sweetheart! Chickens are easy to take care of, can eat “human food” (don’t feed them junk), are are all around good company. Jenna lives in the house, and any mess she makes is easily cleaned up. Indoor chickens require a source of grit (coarse sand will do, as long as it’s clean: play sand from the local hardware store; or buy the pet bird “gravel n grit” from any store where pet supplies are sold); a source of calcium (cuttlebone from pet supply section of your local grocery) and a variety of foods, including seed (good cockatiel mix) greens (fresh produce: highly recommend alfalfa sprouts) and protein (fresh cooked meats: like your entree at dinner, but try to avoid canned products, as they contain too much salt and chemicals). I have a medium sized cage for her to stay in when I leave the house:to keep her out of trouble; chickens like to explore and scratch and pick; but she ususally sleeps on top of it, as a roost. For indoor pet chickens, the small bantam breeds are better, and people will not notice that you have a hen unless you tell them. Most indoor pet chicken owners have either Silkies or Cochins, as they have the mildest personalities. There are lots of sources on the internet for keeping chickens, indoors or out. Get a pet chicken, and you will wonder why you took so long to get one. Enjoy!
all get along fine. i ended up with Rocky cuz his original owner didn’t like having a chicken with feathers on its feet. getting him and his lady, Domino, in the winter, i felt compelled to keep them inside in an old cockatiel cage. NOTE: if you don’t intend to keep them inside, don’t let them get used to it! I now have two chickens that love to sit on the back of the couch (or with the dogs) and both follow me around like dogs.
Rocky and Domino gave birth to jeepers. Three days after jeepers hatched Domino met her untimely death and i now have become “mom”. actually, humans are the only beings that come into the world helpless. chicks instinctively know all, you just have to provide. jeeps now follows me as its mom did. am not sure if “jeeps” is male or female and am only worried that, if male, i will have to send him packing. having one rooster is enuf!
my friends consider me nuts. chickens are good pets, easy keepers and any “mess” they make is an easy cleaner upper. i’ve asked several of the friends how they find it any different than keeping parrots, etc., none have been able to give me an answer.
give chickens a chance…......they truly love to be pet, massaged (roosters especially love to have their combs massaged), are great insect control, easy keepers!
