I had a story published a few years ago as I was a runner up in a short story competition in Woman’s Own.
Although I was pleased to be chosen (only four winner out of three thousand entries) and liked seeing my story in print, I did not like the way it was edited. A few parts that I thought were important were removed, seemingly just to allow space for a picture of a woman reading a magazine. Seemed pointless to me. The readers surely already knew how to read and didn’t need a picture as illustration!
So, you have to accept the editing when your stories are published. Also. you will need to be persistant and try lots of different publications, submitting or as competition entries. Do not be put off by rejection letters – you may need to develop a thick skin, something I’m still working on!
