The trick is not to use a map. If you start on the east coast then just drive west. Then south. Then west. Then north… and so on.

Went from Orono,Maine to San Francisco, California and back in less than two weeks for Spring Break 2002. We stayed for free at our fraternity houses along the way at Iowa State University, University of Wyoming, University of California-Davis and Cal Poly Slo in San Luis Obispo, California. We only had to pay for a hotel room at the Grand Canyon, which we got to in the middle of a blizzard. Go figure.
Also visited a fraternity alum (and another free night) near Nashville, Tennessee. It pays to have fraternity brothers!
One flat tire, an oil change and 7,751 miles later we were back with a few days to spare before classes started again.
I am going to make it come true one day. I love to travel, see new things, drive down roads I have never been down before, find ghost towns…all the stuff that I would get in a cross-country trip. I am not sure if I want to do this in an RV, which may be awhile then, or in a car stopping at motels along the way or ??? Any suggestions and ideas would be welcome! My Dad passed this adventurous spirit on to me. I will do this in his memory.
I love road trips. I think it’s important to see places aside from what you’re used to. I want to see all the parts of my country that I didn’t know existed and it will also help me accomplish my goal of seeing all 50 states.
I need a new perspective and a break from this miserable Akron, Ohio grey!!! I want the sun on my skin and in my eyes.

we stayed at a dive and it was the most depressing day of the last two months… it felt icky and gross and had a casino with weird men hanging round all the time. blah. from here on… it’s B&Bs all the way.

the first day across the country, we stopped in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and toured the underground tunnels that housed Chinese workers for decades that came to Canada for wealth and freedom, but who met only indentured slavery, bigotry and descrimination… my grandpapa (gong gong) came to Canada from guangdong province to work on the railroad!
