So about 2 months ago I’m pushing myself too hard again. Starting to feel that ache in the shoulders so I decide on a Friday I should take some time off. The next day I’m helping a friend out w. her garden and they need some holes dug for their tomato plants. However, they don’t have a shovel, just a post hole digger w. no place to plant the feet. So it’s all slamming down w. the arms. Just about the worst thing I can do. The next day things really ache and I take the day off and gulp down some ibuprofen. Day after that I am in agony. Actually at the point I give in and visit the er. They don’t help much and I have to go back 3 days later and whine until they give me some pain killers just so I can sleep and am not in too much agony.

Things are much improved now (for the shoulder), but the grip’s still weak and I get tingles now and then. Praying I don’t have a nerve/circulation problem that won’t heal itself. Did manage 1 pull-up about a week ago, but with a warning twinge to let it all rest some more. Plan to try again this week.

No chin-up bar available at home anymore, but I’ll work something out. There’s always playgrounds and trees.

Darn my tendons! 6 months ago

Think it was a dynamic move on a climb a few weeks back. Didn’t feel anything at the time, but suddenly had pain under my arm when pulling up. The easier wide grip moves seemed to be affected the most. Think it’s the tendon to my lats. Oddly enough it seemed to happen the day after I did a few exercises for strengthening my rotator cuff muscles.

So I’ve been trying to take it easy without slacking off. Not easy as I feel it even with a singe pull up of any type. Still, manage to do 1-3 a set without hurting myself. Haven’t tried typewriters recently (normally part of my evening sets). Will try one or two tonight and see what happens.

If I got a little more sleep and found the time to push myself a little harder, I’m sure my reps would shoot up. Did for* easys this morning cold (didn’t have time for the usual full calisthenic workout), which is the same as the baseline I took at the beginning of this month. Patience, patience…

    *Edit- “four”

When I do pull-ups some days I can do 4 and some days 5, but they don’t seem to be getting any easier. I do 4 sets of either 4 or 5 (whichever I can do that day) and hopefully they’ll start getting easier :) Good luck everyone!!

In a very little voice… I’m not sure what happened, but after a week giving chin ups a try, my maximum number of pull ups went down. What the?

The only thing that I can think of is that I’ve been doing a lot of running recently… but I can’t see the link.

And, er, that’s three pull ups with good form, plus one wreck.

So far I can’t even lift myself up to the bar, much less past it. My goal is to get to where I can do 10 pull ups without breaking my arms or neck.

    SIX! 20 months ago

I switched to chin-ups (which are slightly easier) for a bit of variety. I do three sets to exhaustion…

I improved two pull-ups this week! :) It will happen.

I’m kind of embarrassed to post, given that I can do at most 4 (FOUR!) unassisted pull-ups. And only the first three have any decent form. I started off with (ahem) 2, and after a few weeks of effort, well, here I am.

Just wanted to share. I’m not out of shape by any means, just not particularly strong. I thought that my starting point might be encouraging to someone else stuck in the low, low, low single digits :)

i did 10 assisted pull ups today. basically i put a low stool under my feet. i’m going to try this every morning for a week and see if my 1 (unassisted) pull up feels any easier.

i also did 10 push ups (knees down) a 3 sets of squats.
