a good time is had by all in ecuador. definitely go, especially if you speak spanish.
I went to Ecuador for three weeks with a study-abroad program with St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa). The Andes are awesome! I preferred our visits to the smaller towns rather than the cities, which I felt were too much like North America. Many people speak English, although you are best served with at least conversational Spanish.
Great place to visit and it was my first experience in a third world country. The people were extremely friendly. There is obviously a language barrier, so you’ll need to know someone that can translate for you. Otherwise stick to the major cities.
I can’t see this happening until my daughters are older, but this one is going in the five-year plan. We’ve been supporting an orphanage in Riobamba for years and want to check it out in person. It also just sounds like a fascinating country, and I think we’d like to spend at least a month there.
