Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

wlakepoor estimation skills

Well, I finally got around to adding it all up and it turns out my estimating skills are much worse than my lack of motivation—I took 1,026,608 steps!

I’m going to give this a try for summer now! Our secret trip to Disney will certainly help my step count for August and the beginning of a new school year in September always means a large number of steps (minus the 3 days we do nothing but sit in meetings for 7 hours a day). 4 years ago

wlakemissing it by a mile

I’m not sure how far behind I am, but my daily totals aren’t usually hitting the 10,000 mark, so I’m not going to make it. I’ve learned that I can’t count on my daily walking to get me enough steps, so I’m going to have to add in a specific walk. I’m not sure where to find the time for that (when I don’t have children in tow), but hopefully when we get into a summer routine in 22 days I’ll figure it out. 4 years ago

RuSpring in my step

I crunched my springtime step numbers.
Here are the numbers so far:

March 20 – 31: 140,854

April: 528,711

May 1 – 8: 158,158

TOTAL = 827,763 steps
1,000,000 – 827,763 = 172,237

172,237 left to do – I should be able to finish this before the end of the month! 4 years ago

Ru1,000,000 steps, baby…

This seems like a great goal to keep my walking momentum on track.

I bought my pedometer the week before the equinox, so I should be able to backtrack and see how far I’ve gotten. I’m still aiming for a minimum of 10,000 a day, and would like to be racking up just as many (or more) steps outside as I do inside. I should be able to nail this before June 21. 4 years ago

I did the actual math on the actual numbers last night instead of estimating, and I’m less than 10,000 steps shy. Of course the numbers are upstairs and I’m not, and moving to go up there would bother the cat. We must not bother the cat. :) Still, I’m a couple thousand over for today, so I’m still melting that snowball! 4 years ago


Yesterday, I was 21000 steps short of the goal before I finished the day. I did an extra 3000 yesterday and almost 2000 today. Evidently, walking around hospitals and doctors’ offices takes a lot of steps! The snowball is melting! 4 years ago


As I was afraid it might, my 8000 missing steps has snowballed into 21000 just two days later. (In my defense, I spent 5 hours in the car traveling and more hours sitting with my mother-in-law, so having just over 5000 steps for the day yesterday is understandable. There’s no excuse for Saturday, though.) So today I tried to fix that a bit by taking a walk in the woods with the children. That went very well until we found a stream and played there for a long time. Still, I’ve already met today’s goal and knocked 1000 steps off of my backlog and the day’s not over yet. 4 years ago

The actual numbers are upstairs and I’m not, but I’m doing ok. I’m about 8000 steps shy of where I need to be. That can either snowball and I’ll end up tens of thousands steps short or I can pick up the pace and make some of it up. There’s a walking track around the field where the big one has baseball practice, so I need to start walking there on days I take him to practice. 4 years ago

This is going to be much easier than last time because my new pedometer tells me how many steps I’ve taken over the past 7 days. It also can tell me how many I’ve done since the pedometer was last reset—too bad I didn’t realize that before today! Next season I’ll do that.

Short of the weekly goal by quite a bit, but considering that I’m still not feeling well, not bad at all. 4 years ago

wlakebetter than I thought

While I don’t have an exact number, I’m doing better than I thought with this goal, getting close to the 11,333 steps I need each day to hit this goal. I’m still ill and struggling to breathe without coughing, so excess walking isn’t easy right now. 4 years ago

wlakeSpring starts tomorrow.

I’ll start again tomorrow, despite the general difficulty of the day. I’m still ill and can’t walk much without being exhausted. Tomorrow’s also the interment for my father-in-law, so there’ll be lots of driving to get there and back. Oh well. I need to make the best of what I’ve got. 4 years ago

wlaketime to restart

A dead pedometer and trouble replacing it with something reliable (and I’m not convinced I’ve been successful) coupled with complete general laziness means I’ve done nothing about this goal since then. Spring starts in three weeks, so I’ll make this a spring goal now. 4 years ago

wlakemany steps short

I haven’t totaled this up in 6 weeks or so, but I know I’m thousands of steps short. I sat on the porch too much this summer. Oh well. I’ll total it up this weekend and if it’s not going to happen, I’ll shift the goal to a fall one. 4 years ago

wlake4 weeks into summer...

Here’s the first update. I’ve walked:
week 1 = 94854
week 2 = 94696
week 3 = 86547
week 4 = 75060
total = 351,157 steps

I figure I’m about 1/3 of the way into the summer and just over 1/3 of the way to my goal, so things are going well. It’s interesting the see the drop off in my step count since my laptop came back from its annual updating. I really need to spend less time online! 5 years ago

wlakedid it once before...

I managed to walk a million steps last fall and it seemed like my pants fit me then. Now they’re all too small as I haven’t walked as much again until recently. Summer started yesterday but my step total is upstairs so I’ll update this tomorrow. 5 years ago
