I have seen African safaris on t.v. and it looks like an incredible experience, also I am an animal lover. I know that one day I will be riding in a jeep on safari in Africa.

Africa was not what I expected, and I expected a rough go. 3 years ago

Well, Capetown was great, and the Penguins south of there was really really amazing. J-bay was nice to experience too. Seeing Kilamanjaro and Victoria Falls, and the singers at Vic Falls were all amazing experiences that make Africa vibrant and amazing, unfortunately…

It was amazingly difficult to communicate- some people do not yet have a grasp of past vs future, yet they are cops and bankers and military police. There are guns, big guns, in the hands of minors and idiots. Not a big deal? Go look for food or a plane ticket- I got asked this question “When do you want to leave last week?” I gaped, and asked what they meant. She said again angrily, “Where you want to go yesterday?” That’s from a woman at a ticket counter selling airline tickets. Who’s fixing the airplanes? Still, there are no huge problems of this nature that cant be solved- so go to the next paragraphs.

Overland tours are really frat parties on wheels. We abandoned ours after spending $1000’s – 4 days into the trip. American rock and roll blairing across the savanna is not my idea of “Africa.”

So you arent going on an Overland tour? Are you really going to chance getting stopped in a Tanzanian “police checkpoint?” Each officer has total omnipotent power, and if you cant appease the beast with candy or bribes, can you avoid Tanzanian Jail? And if you are headed to “luxurious” Dar Es Salaam, get ready for a Beruit-like experience. Quaint, to be sure.

I rode on packed busses with people who had Aids-leisions on their arms and they were crushed up against me, rubbing my skin.

I was at a nice house for about a week in Zambia during my stay, and the woman who owned the house thought she was coming down with the flu, got sicker and sicker, and died of Malaria while I was there.

One village we went to had the latrine at the top of a hill, and all the houses living around the latrine had little streams of smelly yuck for the chickens to drink.

Curiously, I have no idea if I have Bilharzia (spelling) – this is the snail eggs that attach to your skin, burrow into your bloodstream, bore into your spinal column 20 years later, and devour you from the inside over the next 5 years.

Dont call me a racist or anti-africa. Africa needs our money or our leadership, and I’m doing my part.

In my opinion, visiting Africa wont open your eyes, donating a thousand dollars to a food agency will.

Out of Africa 3 years ago

A land of magnificent contrast, exquisite beauty and timeless freedom. Someone once said ‘When you have tasted the waters of Africa, surely you will return to her.’

If there was one place in the world which you must see before you die, it would be Africa. To see nature’s untamed beauty and creations finest creatures in the wild is an unparalled experience.

Night safari in Kruger Nat'l Park 3 years ago

Unforgettable adventure! Driving 5 hours from Pretoria with good friends, seeing a tree move and then realizing that it was a giraffe and I was much too close for comfort…sleeping in the thatched huts, sunset that made the earth look like it was on fire…unforgettable!

spent 3 days on safari at tsavo national park in kenya as a mini-holiday after a 2 month long stent working in clinics/hospitals in nigeria and kenya…it was absolutely amazing. spent time camping in tents and in a hotel/resort both inside the park amongst the animals. slept right next to the watering hole close enough that you could get sprayed with elephant snot-gross, i realize but incredibly cool. saw lions hunt-kill-and-eat antelope and chased down giraffes in our jeep. can’t even begin to describe how beautiful the scenery was-especially at nite, sunrise/sunset because there was no electricity for miles-just us and our mini-mags :) would love to help (hence i checked the box), but didn’t really do any of the arranging for the trip so don’t know how much help i’ll be. but the whole experience of africa-and the safari-was something i wouldn’t trade for anything. it is truly something that cannot be expressed or defined but just something you have to experience-cheesy and stereotypical to say, i know-and i’m grimacing as i tap that out, but it is true. africa is definitely a highlight of my life thus far-although i haven’t really experienced the whole marriage/family/baby thing which my mom assures me will compete for top ranking :). anyway, best of luck to all who pursue this endeavor and do it if at all possible.
