I want to open my own business, but we are scared to risk all of our savings in the venture…we are in our early 40’s with 2 kids under 5, so this might have to be a dream unrealized.

This week was emotionally draining. I submitted a franchise application to Kumon, and had my initial interview. I was accepted to continue in the selection process, but I decided not to pursue it. For a company that wants my $80K, you would think they would try to woo me more. The “sales” guy was really abrupt, and I just didn’t like his overall tone. So, for now I guess I will continue to be a teacher.
I like teaching, I really do. It was a great career before I had children, but now that I’m a mom, I need something with more flexibility. Everyone has this grand idea that teachers get summers off, but we don’t. I work a 10 hour day at school, and I still bring home work. I spend my weekends grading papers and getting caught up. I can’t take a sick day without tons of preparation. I just want the type of job where I can leave for an hour to go to a doctor’s appointment or be able to take a phone call during the day. Teaching is great, but it is too hard on my family. So… I’m still dreaming of a small business.
Ok, we are going slower than I though… but we are going forward… it is better to take time to plan before venturing in something…
A MAINTENANCE COMPANY , GENERAL CLEANING WHICH WILL INCLUDE COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS.
I am getting better about writing things down. But I had another great idea last week. For the life of me I cannot remember what it was. I spent atleast 3 days thinking about it. I have another one that is more of a pitch for a radio show, not much of a business plan though.
Progress is being made on this. When I pick up the fire extinguishers I think we’ll be ready to call in the inspectors again and get the business license. Then it’s a matter of pricing all the used books and moving everything in. Of course I have to make it look really nice.
I’ll have antiques, furniture, glassware, crafts, and used books. Speaking of crafts I need to get started on them too. Mom and I are going to make cute little doggie clothes too.
I guess this is generally one goal most people have for themselves with no real intention of following through with it. I think what motivates myself to do it is not so much the financial aspect but the personal satisfaction of being my own boss. I’ve been cheated, underpaid and treated poorly by far too many employers. Plus who likes idea of being another number in a multi-million dollar company. Here’s to success & happiness….
My desire to open a business goes beyond the financial desire to become wealthy and financially free. It has a lot more to do with the purpose of self accomplishment. I (26) was born in Brazil, South America, and brought to the USA almost 10 years ago; the challenges of a new culture and new language only benefited my personality to become more challenging and intellectually aggressive. The freedom and opportunities that the USA offers to anyone with an idea and a burning desire to thrive are amazing. I’ve had several little business, some quite profitable such as a computer repair and parts, have helped my ego more than my finances. I am currently employee with a wonderful company in Irvine, CA that offers me an excellent salary and very very flexible hours. I plan to get married next year, and the next step that my future wife and I are planning on, is a in home Child Care. After a little research we’ve found lots of pros and cons about the business, but mainly it seems as of now that it can be very profitable and rewarding to help children grow up.
Well let see what we can come up with a few weeks for now.
