I’ve pulled my Bass out of my closet and I’ve been doing as much as I can. And hour or two a day. I feel I’m making progress, however I wouldn’t say ‘I know how to play Bass Guitar’ yet. But. I’m well on my way.

So, I decided to quit. I simply wasn’t getting any enjoyment out of practicing. Putting the time in is one thing, but putting time into something you’re simply not enjoying is another – life’s too short.
I still want to learn an instrument though. Before I was distracted by shiny bass guitars and amplifiers, I already had an instrument in mind.
What instrument? I hear you ask. (Okay, so you didn’t, but I’ll continue as if you did anyway…). It’s not quite as ROCK! In fact it’s not ROCK! at all. It’s…
...a banjo.
Dang.

Well, after I was made redundant I had to give up lessons due to the cost. Now I’m employed again, finding time for them is difficult as I no longer have a morning free.
With a tutor, I found my motivation dropped right off. I really must give myself a kick up the arse and get back into it!

How I did it

Took me 10 years to get good on bass, I would say I am way of being amazing like Victor Wooten but am getting there. HIGHLY recommend the bass guitar to anyone, beautiful instrument, very underrated. It is possible to learn your self like I have, spending no money what so ever. Just research really. A good place to start is

I had the idea of doing this a while back. I went out, bought a secondhand Yamaha RBX374 Bass (complete with a small non-bass specific practice amp) and then proceeded to do very little in the way of actually learning anything. A fairly pointless exercise, one might say.
However – I’ve now picked the darn thing up again and am giving it a shot. I’m absolutely useless at the moment, my fingers might as well all be thumbs for all the use they are on the fretboard, and my coordination is terrible. A very good friend of mine, who is a very accomplished guitarist, assures me that it will come in time, so in the meantime, I just need to practice, practice, practice.
I’ve also recently replaced the teeny tiny practice amp with a proper Marshall Bass combo – it’s a fair few years old, not overly huge, but it’s a Marshall, and what self-respecting Motorhead fan could ever consider anything less? :) The teeny tiny amp will soon be on eBay- it won’t fetch much, but it might as well go as sit about the place gathering dust.
I’m also looking for a good teacher- both to help motivate me, and to teach me the real low-down basics- am I holding the darn thing right, or is it my own cack-handedness that is making things difficult for me?

I have raked about $275 together and I want to buy a bass so I can get moving on this goal. I may go to the Guitar shop tomorrow and check it out. I have an amp for my guitar but I think I might need a different one for the Bass so I do not damage it.

The Beginning
I have a bass guitar and have taken some steps to begin learning to play it, but need to start practicing on a regular basis in order to make steady progress. While it might seem obvious, I also need to keep my fingernails the right length as having nails too long can be a big obstacle in being able to play the bass correctly and get the right sound.
