Our mulberry tree 21 months ago

is a bit wild. That’s not to say that it is a feral tree – no, it’s the opposite and I recall when my mom planted it in the yard. What I mean by wild is this tree has a mind of its own.

Mulberry trees are supposed to grow with their branches DOWN, like a weeping willow tree would. But OUR crazy mulberry tree? Noooooo, not HER! (We have a male, too, the one I’m talking about is the female of the two that produces berries every year.)

No, this tree’s branches grow BOTH ways; towards the ground like the well behaved male counterpart, and also skyhigh. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve trimmed this tree’s rebellious branches, trying and HOPING it will grow properly. Instead the branches grow taller and thicker! (Especially because it’s limbs are now touching the power line to the house, I plan to lop off the wayward branches before winter comes, and with it an ice storm… Then said mulberry tree’s branches will hit the power line and POOF! we’re out of power in the dead of winter.)

From past experience with this tree, I know that mulberry branches are hollow inside, or with a very soft pith that can basically be blown out. Once the branches are trimmed, I want to dry them and make them into homemade beads for a homemade bead curtain to go in our bedroom.

I made a necklace years ago from the same branches and got tons of compliments on it’s unique design, so I hope the curtain will be pretty, too.

rappster asks, “What kinds of beads, thread etc should I use to make a very large beaded curtain as a room divider in my basement?”
