How to work on a cruise ship
How I did it: I applied to work for Disney Cruise Line in April 2007, through Cast-A-Way Cruise and Resort Hiring Agency. I interviewed for a position in merchandise in May, and was officially hired in June. After I was hired, I had to fill out tons of forms, do medical tests, and wait. And wait, and wait and wait. Finally, in September, I got the phone call that a position had opened up, and I was flying out to Florida in two weeks. That's pretty much the norm in the cruise industry as far as I know. I worked on the Disney Wonder from October 2007 to April 2008.
Lessons & tips: Cruise life is not easy. You work long hours, live in a very small, shared cabin, and the food is often questionable. You do, however, meet tons of people from all over the world, get to sail to beautiful ports of call (our main port of call was Nassau, Bahamas) and have many adventures other people will only dream about.
Since I was on a Disney Cruise, there were very strict appearance rules: no visible piercings or tattoos, no body modifications, and no extreme hairstyles/colours.

Readysetlive is re-evaluating my life's purpose
I am a licensed massage therapist in North Carolina and I feel like it would be a great life lesson.
Hello everyone.
I am desperate to join my fiancee on board. She started on one in October and wants me to try and join her.
I have applied to so many agencies and companies and received nothing positive. I have hotel experience but no sea time.
Can any help with any info I may find useful.
I was thinking about doing a Cruise Ship Diploma at cruiseshipdiploma.com – has anyone completed one of these? Does the cruise industry care for such certificates.
Thank you for your time.
Hi
My friend and I want to work on Carnival Cruise Liners. We’ve been searching for info on the net, but we don’t really know how to get in contact with them. If anybody can help us please let me know!!!
Thanx…
I sent in an application to Steiner. They are a company that hires for spa positions on most major cruise lines. I got an email yesterday offering different dates and cities to have an interview. I sent in my preferred date and place. They will be contacting me in a few weeks with more details. I am very excited about this prospect. I have a lot of student loans and not having to pay rent, utilities and all that will help a ton. I have been reading a lot online that makes me a little nervouse though. I understand I will be working long hours, but I read somewhere that you work 7 days a week. Do you really not get any sort of day off? anyone work in the spa on a cruise ship? I’d love to hear some first hand experience.
I just finished my first contract on Carnival. I was on the Carnival Elation. Overall I have to say that you do indeed work a lot of hours, the food can be iffy at time (great at times too).
Ultimately its really all about what your goals are and how you spend your time. I, for instance, got my SCUBA diving certification in Cabo San Lucas, something I’ve always wanted to do. I learned about the culture of Mexico, another smaller goal of mine.
I also met some really great people from all over the world, many of which I am still in contact with. Not to mention I met my Fiancée on the ship!!! Talk about life changing for the better!!!
I’m starting my second contract on the Carnival Valor in two weeks.
I had my heart set on this job for a while, but I got a better job instead. YAY
I used to enjoy my job, but I don’t anymore. Working on a cruise ship is not for everyone. Be prepared for ridiculously long hours, little sleep, crappy food, and a barrage of stupid questions.
EDIT: Ok, overall it wasn’t horrible. I’m just tired of it. I don’t regret doing my contract, I met some wonderful people and got to see Nassau, Bahamas, but I don’t want to pursue a career in the cruise industry.
I guess in that way it was worth it. I learned a lot, and experienced a lot. Now I’m moving on to other things.
