How I did it: I talked to my bank and credit card companies about lowering my monthly bills and consolidating some debts.

I also started watching how I spent my money, and made sure I could always pay more than the amount that was due on my monthly credit card bills.

And when it comes to big purchases - I've started being aware of how much was in my account to make sure I could pay it all off, or a good chunk of it, when the first statement comes in.

Lessons & tips: Start thinking long-term. I'm usually one for instant gratification, but credit is one of those things where you have to make sacrifices today to reap the benefits in the future.

Call your creditors! They are actually very willing to help you (they do want your money after all) and understand about having trouble making ends meet.

Pay your bills on time every month and try to pay more than the minimum due.
