Nick and Sterling were merciless in their teasing. The teacher’s opinion that it was just because they liked me offered little consolation. One day I just cracked, and Sterling had the bad fortune to be standing in front of me at that moment, while I was sitting on a stool, in the perfect position to kick my leg upward at the target.
It was in between classes at school and nobody saw or told and I didn’t get in trouble. I guess it made me feel stronger at the time, like I wasn’t taking any shit from anybody. Especially since they pretended to be afraid of me for the rest of the school year. And at the end of the school year, Sterling was sent away to military school.
I feel sad for my younger self when I think about it now—sad that I felt so powerless and victimized that I needed to resort to violence to feel powerful.
