I have been thinking about Bob a lot  — 1 year ago

because I get these intermittent obsessions. I like puzzles.

If I were an obsessed man, of course, I would know everything about him and have all the films and the albums (actually I’ve got a lot of the albums, about 10) and know what kind of guitar, and who played the bass on every track – but to me all that is neither here nor there.

I just like the way he keeps everyone guessing and hates doing interviews. There are a few on You Tube. One guy (or girl)must go to a hell of a lot of Dylan concerts because he posts a lot of concert footage on You Tube. He should get some kind of discount.

Saw Bob last night  — 1 year ago

at Wembley Arena. He doesn’t do chat. He just plays the songs. At the end he introduces the band. I couldn’t see as well as I’d hoped (I forgot to take my glasses) but row 11 is not too bad, and there were times when I could see Bob’s face (difficult under his big white hat) quite clearly. One of the special things about him is his jerky movements – just turning his head or rocking it in time to the music – there is just something very characteristic about it. Very good music; we enjoyed our outing very much, tho it was after midnight when we got home.

It’s strange about the lack of chat tho. Why does Bob not connect with his audience? Does he hate and despise us all? You get a much better idea of him from reading his book or listening to Theme Time Radio Hour.

What is Bob Dylan like?  — 1 year ago

I’ve just read Chronicles: this is all we have to go by.

He’s single-minded and very very serious about what he does.

He needs to produce the goods from his heart.

He likes to be in touch with the elemental and archetypal things.

He doesn’t care about grammar, but he cares about meanings, and about saying what he means. Sometimes he knows what he means, and sometimes he doesn’t. But chasing meanings is a kind of end in itself. I’ll think about this, maybe it’s not right.
