I suppose a more pragmatic approach would be to merely accept the inevitabilities of life and develop a keen sense of irony. Although life presents myriad opportunities to simply pause and do something silly, or to interject a humorous observation, there are few forms of humor more potent than irony – and ironic realizations tend to most commonly occur when bad things happen. The downside to this track of mind is that it is rarely entertaining to others at the time; only a person who has developed a taste for irony can learn to laugh at their hardships.
An example would be a time in my youth when I was entering a parking structure on my way home after a long day. Suddenly, I was hit in the side and found upon exiting the vehicle that the rear quarter had been utterly demolished. I went through the regular process of exchanging phone numbers and insurance information with the other driver, then as I entered the car to finish parking, I was struck by an amusing thought: I had just had the automobile washed and serviced and had paid extra for the wax.
Although the humor does little to alleviate the problems we regularly face, it tends to make life more entertaining and it gives us a mean by which we can step out of ourselves and view our circumstances the way they might look if they had occurred in a movie.
When someone slips and falls – it’s funny.
When I slip and fall – it’s hilarious.
