How to join a roller derby team
How I did it: I took a deep breath and joined a starting out league in my area. Roller Derby was something I always wanted to do but finally after getting the guts to do it I could not be more thankful for my team. They have taught me so much and not just how to skate or give hit but how to be confident, powerful and amazing.
Lessons & tips: Have fun, don't get discouraged and slug away.

too young to join the only local team (which is actually brand new). have to be 21 =/
nopurplestuff There is no try!
I think I’m going to try the roller derby this summer. I want to get in better shape before I begin so I’m not a complete wimp. So once finals are over (3 days) I’m going to start exercising hardcore! It’s bathing suit season AND I want to rock the roller derby!
I’ve never really been that interested in roller derby, after having learned it exists about three years ago. I saw a demonstration at the local college last year, and I thought it might be fun to go to one of the matches. I liked the outfits and the nicknames, but I’m not good at sports, or skating at all, and I’m not aggressive, nor do I enjoy pain. So I never thought about it as a serious thing.
Then I ran into the guy who is dating the girl who first introduced it into my life… and I was intrigued. A lot has changed in the past three years. Then I happened to see a post on LiveJournal about it. Then an article on Mookychick.com. Then I heard about a movie coming out soon centered around roller derby. I was convinced. I have to give it a shot.
I’m giving myself a while to achieve this goal – I have to learn to skate well enough, then get all my equipment, and then I would feel comfortable joining a team. But I’m going to attempt this, and hopefully I will win. :)

Don’t think about it just do it. It’s a blast! I have such good girlfriends now thanks to roller derby. It’s a good way to get in shape and a great way to make life long friendships. And not to mention you get to make up a cute or tough name for yourself. Like mine is Marilyn Gun-Hoe and I play roller derby with the T.O. Rock ‘n’ Rollers. Here’s our myspace is you need help finding a team around you. myspace.com/torocknrollers

P.S. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the B.A.D.(Bay Area Derby) Girls. They are a very very good league to join.
I have just moved back to the Bay Area (SF) after living in another country for 8years and I am keen to join a roller derby team in the SF region. I am not experienced in roller derby, but I want to give it a go and join a local team. Any suggestions?

April 12th I saw the Port Authorities go against the Rhode Island Riveters. MRD won of course <33 I belive it was 75-64? It was around that. The girls looked like they had so much fun and the energy there was Wow! lol it cool too because for the certain fans that are 21 and over get to watch from a fenced in bleacher section called the Beer Garden it was pretty sweet. Oh and the live music that was played my a band from boston that call themselves Lovewhip they were pretty sweet too. It was just great all round.

I live 30 minutes outside a small city and I don’t drive. Also, there’s really no place in town set up for this. It’s just not going to happen. I still enjoy skating up and down my road in my skates though.
