I like to think I could handle being a Derby Girl… I already have my Derby name picked out & everything, haha! If we were staying in the area I would join up with Viva Roller Derby, a team started by a girl I know. =) Maybe someday! 9 months ago

How I did it: Contacted my local derby team telling them I wanted to join! Bought all the gear, paid my dues, and started skating. It's going to take me a long time to get good, but I'm so excited to be skating for a long time! Should have joined years ago! Read how I did it… 9 months ago

...that maybe I should let this one go. I have very little free time, I’m not getting any younger, and nobody wants to see my big ass in a pair of booty shorts. Although I finally have health insurance now, which was a big hurdle.
I suppose really the only reason I’m hanging onto the idea that I’ll take skating classes this summer and maybe try to join the league here in Long Beach, is guilt. The Man and my parents together bought me a gorgeous pair of Riedell quad skates for my birthday two years ago. I was learning, and it was hard because I’m not terribly athletic. But I was finally starting to feel like I knew what I was doing, at least a little bit.
Then I fell and injured my tailbone, which made it hard to skate (and even now makes it difficult for me to sit for extended periods of time). So I quit skating, and I almost don’t want to try to pick it up again because I’m going to be starting from scratch and feeling like a big dumbass. Again. I hate that feeling.
And on the other side I feel guilty for NOT getting back into it, because the skates were expensive. I also feel like a failure for not following through, which is force of habit for me.
I don’t know. It’s starting to look like maybe my second job will be cutting my hours back so that I don’t have to work on Sunday nights, which is one of the derby league training days. Maybe if that happens, I’ll look into this more seriously again.
We’re a wee bit maudlin tonight anyway. 16 months ago

I’ve been wanting to join a roller derby team for forever now and I’m finally getting the guts to do it. A close friend of mine just joined a team and inspired me to go for it. I’ve also been going through a rough time emotionally and feel derby would be a good outlet and also a good environment, I could use some quality time around some kick ass ladies. I need a strong positive influence in my life and I think derby will help me grow more independent. I’m making a goal to start skating a couple times a week to build up my stamina and ankle muscles and then another friend and I are going to learn to roller skate, I blade like a beast but skates are another story. 18 months ago

I mentioned that I was going to watch their practise session back on the 2nd of October. I bought skates the next day and I joined the team the week after. We’re still a new team but coming along in leaps and bounds.
One of the best things I’ve ever done.
Would definitely recommend it! 18 months ago

There is a new Roller Derby team in York, The York Minxters. I’m going to watch their second ever practise on Sunday!
I don’t want to invest in new skates etc. if it isn’t a together team or looks like it might not happen. Fingers crossed! 19 months ago
