drive on the highway

I’m comfortable going on one particular highway from one particular exit. It’s an easy on-ramp and it doesn’t get too crowded. My boyfriend made me drive on a more busy highway one night and that was a bit scary. If he takes me a few more times, I’d like to think that I will be good to go on that one by myself also.

I live in New York City so the highways tend to be very packed with lots of cars and trucks. I went on the highway one time with my driving instructor but ever since I got my license in November 08, I haven’t had the guts to get on. I really want to be comfortable with the highway so I can go to the beach over the summer – and to the mall! – but it seems so scary! It’s mainly merging onto the highway that freaks me out… and possibly getting lost…

Stupid but true: I avoid driving on the highway at all costs. I’ve always been in some kind of steady relationship, or at least since I was sixteen, and the guy always wanted to drive. Pair this with a six car pile-up on a Baltimore highway several years ago while looking at colleges, and I’ve never really been comfortable with highway driving. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do more of, and now that I’m single for the first time in my life, it seems like a good time for a road trip.

I know some people that have a serious fear about driving on the highway, or just driving. To each their own. I’m glad I don’t suffer from that.
