learning letters 2 months ago

His grandpa bought him some letters. I will go over them every day with him. We do lots of reading, too!

Go Dog Go 5 months ago

I read his favorite book to him all the time. I love reading to him. It’s one of my favorite bonding activities.

I will teach him his letters by the end of the summer for sure.

Starting with Letter Recognition 10 months ago

We have been using soap crayons to go over letters in the shower. He can mostly name Z, S, L, M, B, and C now along with a word that starts with the letter. I am so proud of his progress and am confident that we will have the uppercase letters down by the middle of the summer.

My son just turned 4, and he is now ready to learn letter recognition. Since he is an extremely active person, we cannot get him to sit still for lessons. So, we have to be creative and use little moments to teach. We play with him at his new chalkboard and with the tub crayons and other things. I point out things on signs when we are at the store or in the car. I think he is picking up way more this way than he ever would by sitting in front of me with flash cards. At the same time, we are working on number recognition. He actually enjoys the number stuff more, so maybe he takes after mommy and daddy who are both math teachers. :)

Teaching Luke to read 11 months ago

So I’ve started on teaching my 2 year old son how to read. I’ve already taught him the entire alphabet. He knows them by sight. We’ve now started with the sounds of the letters. A friend of mine who has been a teacher for many years gave us a DVD cartoon that is helping him learn the sounds. He’s doing quite well. He picks up on things rather quickly. He is already interested in books and asks to be read to constantly. Hopefully, we can keep this up so that he is reading on his own by age 3!

I will teach him all his letters. I can’t wait until he can read!

He’s reading Cat In The Hat and Teletubbies all by himself. He rocks!

I bought him phonics flashcards for Christmas, and he’s always excited to practice with them. He’s doing well, and can sound out a lot of words on his own. I think he’ll do just fine and will be at the same reading level as the other kids when he starts kindergarten this year.

He’s lately been really into volcanoes and plate tectonics, so he’s added another word (volcano) to his instant-recognition list. :)

I learned at the age of 4 22 months ago

with nobody teaching me, just my Gram reading “Green Eggs and Ham” over and over again. (I try to remember her undying patience when Baby Girl asks for her Maisy book for the zillionth time.) So now D’s 5 and he’s so ready to learn. I don’t want to make him feel any stress, so I just want to make a concentrated effort to play more word games with him, work on his sight word book a little more regularly, and make more books with him. I also like ReynoldsGirl’s idea of sight word flash cards.

We’re trying, but he has such a hard time sitting still and concentrating. He’s smart, and if it’s something he’s really interested in, he learns it just like that. He can read “dinosaur”, “allosaurus”, etc. But try to get him to remember, “and” and “for”? Not a chance. I’m thinking “bookworm” is not one of the hats my boy is going to wear. Actor, comedian, rock star, modern interpretive dancer, yes. Bookworm, no.
