But when can one say they really are a mathematician? The further along I get, the further I lift the bar…
How to become a mathematician
How I did it: Well, a lot of this for me is just having the confidence to claim that I am a mathematician.
I've got my PhD, I've published papers and I've got a job as a research mathematician, but I still don't (didn't?) really think I am one, because I'm not really smart enough to be a mathematician, surely?
Then the other day I was talking to an old friend from university and he starting talking to me as if he really knew more than me about everything, including my own area of research! He started giving me ill-informed advice in a really condescending manner, even though he doesn't know anything about what I'm trying to do.
I was so offended and angry! So I decided I should start acting more confidently, and I'm starting by clicking the "I've done this" button on this goal.
