I fell in love with sign language around the age of 12. My friend and I learned the alphabet and a few other words. We would use it at campouts at night so we could talk without getting in trouble.

When I was around 14 I took a sign language class at the local college.

The problem is, if you don’t use it, you lose it. It never really went into my brain and I was just left with a couple words that wouldn’t help me much in real life situations.

A deaf couple that I know moved from their church in a nearby communuty to ours because they could walk to our church. They patiently and kindly started teaching me how to sign (mostly SEE, not ASL). Over the course of maybe 2 years, I can say that I have reasonably good enough skills to be an interpreter for them during services. I have gotten to the point where I can think in sign language, even if I don’t know as much as I would like. I think that’s a good place to be.

But if I miss church a few times in a row because of travel or sickness, I find it harder to get back into it. Same-o-same-o….use it or lose it.
