Gearóid understands cricket ... it's not bad!
The rules are so simple! The Ashes are over now though, so I’ve to wait to watch a bit of cricket before I can be sure I understand!
How I did it: I searched all over the internet for places that explained the rules. I watched a few YouTube videos, and read a few sites, but most of them were pretty poor and only served to confuse me more.
I went on to Wikipedia's page on cricket, which is written nice and simply. I found it very easy to understand, and I learned all the basics from it. I sat down for a good hour and just read through every bit slowly, making sure I understood it. Then I went onto YouTube and watched highlights of The Ashes to see if I could make sense of it.
Today (4/9/09), I'm watching the ODI (One Day International) between England and Australia. Each team has one innings, each of which consists of 50 overs, unless the bowling team gets 10 wickets. And that all makes sense to me! :)
Lessons & tips: Read Wikipedia's page on Cricket (link below), and watch a live cricket match on TV if you can (it's on Sky Sports a lot). If you can't watch it on TV, watch some highlights or parts of games on YouTube, it'll help you make sense of it.

Cricket’s easy to understand, it’s just a matter of sitting down, being patient and watching it. Playing it would be an even better way to learn how to understand it, which is something I’m working on now.
you should do it!!! i did it and it really made my life so much richer!!! any sport that has a tea break and lasts 5 days is well worth watching!!! when i was in Sri Lanka 7 years ago i listened to the cricket scores on the radio and said to myself “you gotta be kiddin”, but 5 years – and some days spent lying on my couch in Sydney watching the game – later i fully understood it, and loved it immediately…
