How I did it: The cruise took us to Alexandria then I had a private guide meet us. GAT Tours arranged a tour based upon my choices: Pyramids, museum, lunch on the Nile, Khan El Khalili. I even got them to add riding camels at the pyramids! With the unrest in the Middle East, we have been warned off of a visit to Egypt. However, while on vacation, we met a woman who worked in a Cairo hotel and she told us safety is not an issue. While we are not naive enough to believe there is no risk, our experiences in traveling to other countries on the State Department watch list makes us believe that it is not excessive. This year, however, we are planning on trips to Southeast Asia, Europe and Hawaii, and don’t believe we will have the opportunity to go to Egypt. Perhaps next year. It is relatively easy to get from the UK to Cairo.
