This weekend I’m harvesting some to steam and eat. It’s not a garden, but it is harvesting food on my own patch of desert.

Are vegetables cheaper when you grow them yourself? Healthier? Uglier? lol. Do you enjoy them more because you dug in the ground for them?
Worth doing!
My garden is pretty much my favorite thing! I grow vegetables and herbs. It’s very rewarding to eat things you yourself have grown! Especially with food prices being the way they are, this is totally worth it!

The three surviving tomato plants in a container on my fiancee’s balcony are still looking happy and healthy, despite 90-degree heat. Still, they’ve produced just one, tiny tomato combined at this point.
So, it’s not a garden. But it may be practice for when I can finally have one.

Growing a garden is a radical political statement. Okay, so that’s a little rhetorical, but it’s true. I know Tucson in the summer is tough, but I need to start somewhere. It’s not longer a matter of choice, but of necessity. I think in the next 1-5 years, gardens are going to start to show up like they did during pre-WWII days, because oil is going to have such an impact on food supplies and global warming, that homegrown food is going to be a ncessity. What’s easy to start to grow in the latter-part of June in southern AZ? Any ideas? I need something easy so I can get started. My head is in the right place, but I’m not walking my talk.
My goal will be complete when I get to taste the first tomato from the vines. Currently we have 12 tomato plants with about what I can count to be almost 30 pea sized tomatoes. It will be a few weeks, but I think this thing is almost complete. The rest of the garden is still growing, but soon will also be producing.

Unfortunately I didn’t make it out to save the garden when it was hailing. I am hoping for a rebound but if it doesn’t I don’t think I will buy any replacement plants. :(
I have a garden on my porch right now because our backyard has yet to be landscaped. I’ve planted vegetables and herbs and they’re all doing well! Container gardening is great and I think even when I have a garden I might stick to the containers because our porch gets more sun. I’ve planted Cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce; chives, basil, parsley, and cilantro.
Great blog that includes info on growing your own food… http://jessimonster.wordpress.com/
Happy Gardening everyone!

try container gardening. It will allow me to fully sod the back yard and help me save water and time(weeding exc.).
