Everything pays you somehow. 3 days ago

I have this theory, about “no free lunches”, and I believe volunteering is a great way to get more out of life. If I put in X amount of energy, I get Y returns in accordance. Typically in life Y is money… but with Volunteering, you go in with a negative Y value. Expecting to loose money really(transport costs, etc).. so surely you should get an equal, if not greater, return?

I will find out soon! I hope!

Excited... for the first time in agesss!!! 3 days ago

I’m feeling REALLY good about this new volunteering role. So good, it’s making me consider doing a 360 in my career plans… there’s a long way to go until I’m fully into it yet (a lot of training days before they let me go do it on the streets) BUT… it’s feeling really good that I get to help people to reach their goals! I’m getting a buzz out of the new people I’m meeting and the places I’m going with it!

One way to become an expert in the Vietnamese language is to use freely available machine translation services to help you see bilingual version of everything you come across. Google already come up with a free Vietnamese translator and even combine it with a search engine. Show this to your Vietnamese relatives and see their eyes glow.

I’ve done a community service project here and there.. But never really consistently volunteered.

Apparently, there is an animal shelter with walking distance of my house.. So that’s a potential outlet. I went there the other day and got to play with kittens, haha.

Been a volunteer firefighter for a year and a half now. It’s been an intense experience, very happy I took the chance and applied. You’ll never know your limits until you put them to the test ;)

Getting Started 1 week ago

I want to start volunteering – for the first time. I want to have a sense of purpose and meaning outside of my own selfish needs and wants and I’m hoping that volunteering will fulfill that – hmm that sound like a selfish want right there. :S

I’ve chosen the place I’d like to volunteer, have filled out the application, am waiting on two other recommendation letters, finished my cover letter and need to finish my resume.

I’m going to be honest here – getting started is a pain in the butt. Whatever happened to just walking in off the street and telling them you have some time and want to help? I don’t think I had to do this much work to get a job. But, I guess it’s good practice and if I do get the opportunity I want, it’ll be a really good learning opportunity as well. :)

I love volunteering in my kids' schools on Fridays 1 week ago

Its something that my kids and their teachers can count on. I love working in the library at my daughter’s school. Maybe I could turn this into more than a volunteer job? If not at the school, maybe one of the local libraries I frequent?
