... had a sony (f707) prior to the 20D. Definately an incredible difference. Like you said, the speed.
I also highly recommend a pair of speedlites to open up a whole new range of capability.

I went out on a limb, having used a Sony DSC for many years. EOS20D plus EFS17-85 zoom. I haven’t looked back.
Initially it was a little large and heavy, with the buttons requiring a bit of a stretch to reach, but now I’m used to it, it’s absolutely fine. With the extremely quick start-up and focus, I’ve already captured far more than I ever did with the Sony – especially during action/activity.
