How to be an extra
How I did it: My agent set it up. It was an episode of CSI Miami. All I had to do was show up. Most of the time, you stand by in a tent waiting to be called. Unfortunately, you end up meeting a lot of prima donnas.
Lessons & tips: Don't expect to appear in the final footage. I only saw myself for half a second, and the scene I thought would definitely make it on film, I didn't because they ended up using the close up footage of Emily Proctor instead. Fair enough. They feed you really well. Take advantage of it.
Resources: My agent found me while I was working as a waitress.

I’ve been an extra in a mobile phone commercial! It was an interesting experience, and fun because i did it with a friend.
But its not all fun and games. It was very boring waiting around and having to do the same take over and over again!
Good for a bit of extra cash tho!
I do it constantly and everytime is just so much fun for me. I was an extra on ER which was excellent because I was on the Warner Bros lot and I was a patient. I got to dress in the hospital gown and lay on the gurney with the mask and tubes all over me.
Right now its been insane with the lack of jobs out there but I’m dying to get back in there and work more. Its worth it everytime
I was an extra for the movie, Death to Smoochy. Terrible movie but still salvageable thanks to the few scenes of utter Steve-ness. :)
It took place in Toronto at the Maple Leaf Gardens rink. I was there for the Nazi-puppets scene, the scene with the fairy lady floating down, and the scene where [spoilers] Smoochy gets shot in the head… but still lives! I’m sure there were a few more, but I totally forgot the rest of that March Break week.
Filming at Red Lake Arizona in 1995. Met Michael J Fox, & Sarah Jessica Parker. I was an extra on the set for over 2 weeks at the Arizona location, some rain and dust storms increased the time that we were out filming.
Each day involved getting bussed from the fairgrounds in Kingman to the Red Lake set location. When we got to the set, we would goto wardrobe and get outfitted. My wardrobe was tan pants and a hawaiian shirt. After wardrobe, we would go to props to pick up whatever piece of equipment we were assigned. Then we would meet in the tent for breakfast and wait for the women to finish in hair and makeup.
Once everyone was ready, then we would wait for the casting crew to call certain groups of extras out to the set. There were a variety of groups of extras: camera people, military personnel, hippies, & people in the grandstands. I had a friend who was casted as a monk for the grand stand, he had to shave his head for the part.
When we got the call to go to set, it was a very exciting event. Everyone called, and some that weren’t ;), would then in a controlled manner, make the way out to the set. Then we would usually wait for last minute touches to be made. We would get instructions on what we were suppose to do and not do when action was called. Sometimes when explosions were involved, we were told to look scared and run. But when there are multiple hot explosions and dirt bombs, one doesn’t need to be told to run!
During one of the down times on the set, I saw Michael J Fox in a tent and went over and got my picture taken with him and his autograph! I will dig up my photos and post one here.
All in all it was a great experience, I would definitly do it again. It may be that I was an extra in an action film that made it more of a great experience. Maybe being in another film with less action would be a little more boring. It was great to see all of the behind the scenes stuff go on. It also made me appreciate the whole movie making process and how much time and money goes into the littlest of scenes.
I was an extra on a commercial for Visa. It was at the dropzone that I worked and jumped at. It was fun to have something to do besides stand around and watch.
i was an extra at a movie for two days. you think you only sit around and stand in while they adjust the camera, etc… but it was the most tiresome two days of my life (or so it felt). waking up at 5 to get ready every day, and re-doing every shot a gazillion times, really is very hard work. :] but its worth it! and i totally want to do this again.
Its long, boring and you dont do much. But it’s so worth it anyway. it’s an interesting experience, you meet interesting people (who knows who you might meet) and you get to feel like a different person for a day. The best thing about my extra work was I got to be three different kinds of romans. Standing around in a peasants dress next to a charming group of roman soldiers eating mars bars and drinking coke is a great memory and amusing anecdote. I’d do it again for the fun, definitely NOT the money…!
