I decided to try one from a dead hang today for the heck of it. I’ve been doing pulldowns and assisted pullups as part of my routine for two weeks. Lo and behold! I can do it! But just one. On to a new goal.
How to be able to do at least one pull-up
How I did it: 1. I build a horrible thing at the top of my bathroom door... finger training board I think it's called... but mine is a piece of wood with little pieces of wood screwed on (for climbing training)
2. started trying - no way
3. started with my feet bent leaning on a chair (I read somewhere on the net that it's better to do pull-up with help than no pull-up)
4. I made a rule that each time I step through the kitchen door I should try 3 pull-ups on the upper part of the door (thank God it's rather wide :) ) (I became very organized - one trip to the kitchen = 6 pull-up tries = I NEVER forget the fork)... but still it seemed to help
5. Yesterday (in public!) (so I've got witnesses! :p) I grabbed the bar (labeled "men only") at the training place (I had to jump a little to grab it) and just pulled up :D My first thought was "huh?" :)
Lessons & tips: The first part of the move is the hardest. Try lifting your body as if you want to touch the bar with your chest not the top of your head. Helped me.

Bolt up some easy climbing holds above a doorway in your house (one you pass a bunch of times a day) and give it a go every time you walk through the doorway. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll get there! One of those silly things that actually feels really great when you can finally do it!
