I love a piano. They’re big and complicated and beautiful. There’s something so exquisite about just sitting and listening to Debussy or Mozart. I want to know how to play those songs I love so much.

How I did it: I started piano lessons when I was eight years old. I continued taking them until I graduated from high school and went away to college, so ten years. My piano teacher is one of the most wonderful people I know, and it helped having such a wonderful role model. And I also practiced a lot. My goal was to reach the point where I could sit down and sightread just about anything, and I can do that now! I still pl… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I really wanted to learn how to play the song Bella's Lullaby" from Twilight so i printed out the music and started learning it key by key. There was an old keyboard in the attic of my house and it shows what note each key is so i just used that and listened to the song until i could play it. I spent about 4-6 hours each day learning it. Next up is "River Flows In You" by Yiruma. Read how I did it…

How I did it: It was one of my childhood dreams to learn to play the piano. A year ago I bought a relatively cheap digital piano but I couldn’t afford to take lessons. I got a few pieces of sheet music of children’s songs I knew well, and started teaching myself. It took me a while because I really never learned to read music, at least not very well. Bar by bar, I finely wrote in pencil the letters for the notes I remembered next to each note. The… Read how I did it…

How I did it: Learning piano is not something you can do in a week. It takes years to get any good, and you can never be "finished" learning piano, or any instrument for that matter. I started taking lessons in 3rd grade, and have been taking them with the same teacher ever since. I get better every day, but the most important thing is to practice. Read how I did it…

How I did it: I've toyed with the idea of learning to play piano several time in my life, not really digging too deep, and not really getting anywhere. About 8 months ago i bought a decent cheap keyboard, and started actually getting serious about it. I cant really say that I have 'learned to play piano', all i can really say is that I have progressed significantly in the last 8 months, and can now play some piano, and have composed some piano music.Ho… Read how I did it…

I have the longest fingers, and all my life people have asked me if I play, and I’ve never been able to say yes. I played the violin when I was little, but I was terrible at it, and got bored of just making screeching noises!
I moved to the UK when I was 18 and have been toying with the idea of doing it for ages, and now I finally think I’ll just get on with it and do it. I’m finally finishing my higher education in a week (!!!) so its one of the first on my list – find a teacher, get it done.
Bonnie is going to practice piano now.
It has been quite some time since I have been on here to do any updates. I have still not met my goal of playing “Yesterday” (turned out to be a bit more difficult than I expected). However, I am progressing well on “Lady Madonna”. I am also learning “Imagine” which is an extreme struggle, but I am not giving up on it.
Overall, I am progressing, and can actually play some not so simple tunes. I am definitely going to keep working at this goal.

It was one of my childhood dreams to learn to play the piano. Then, I tried to put my fingers in the right places on the keyboard. I was able to correct myself by hearing whether the sound seemed right. After a few weeks I was able to play two-handed, and now I play easy to intermediate classical pieces.
Two things enabled me to learn the piano. First, I was able to explore on my own. Second, I had had early exposure to classical piano music. My grandfather and other relatives played regularly and well, but they never taught me. Whenever grandpa played I sat on the sofa mesmerized. I stored all the melodies in my head and could sing and hum entire Brahms and Chopin pieces without being able to read the notes or play them. I never thought this kind of musical storage would ever be of any use to me, but it definitely helped me learn this instrument.
