How to go on safari

Okay, this is retrospective 6 months ago

I always wanted to go on safari, and in August 2006 I found out one of my best travelling buddies was going. So I joined her. We spent the last week of November in Kenya, just the two of us by chance on an amazing tour of Sambura, Lake Nakuru, Naivash and Narok with three Kenyans, Bernard, Mike and Sam.
The first week of December, we were joined by one other guy and travelled to Tanzania with a different crew. We toured Lake Manyara, the Serengeti (incredible), the Ngorongoro crater (wow) and Tarangire. I kept a journal for my niece, ‘Martha’s list’ which listed all the animals we saw, which is such a fabulous read now, and took some amazing photos.
For anyone, who is considering the possibility, do it, but do it camping, it’s amazing.

I want to go to the Masai Mara in Kenya and watch the migration.

I want to see crocdiles, lions and cheetahs.

13 years and counting 14 months ago

I’ve wanted to go to Africa since I was 11 – we studied Nigeria in Geography in the first year of secondary school and I always vowed I go to Africa.

We’re getting married next year, but Mike said we can save to go as soon as we’re married! WHOOP!

Too long of a long term goal 19 months ago

Our priorities have shifted again so this one will have to wait maybe five or ten years! :(

I went to South Africa last March and visited Thornybush (near Kruger National Park). It was truly the best holiday EVER and I am absolutely dying to go back. The whole experience was amazing. I was getting very teary as it was time to leave!!! We didn’t see any leopards though, so really must must must go back!

Never really give up on this one. My dad just told me the other day that his grandmother’s 2 aunts were those crazy aunts who never married but had all sorts of adventures including going on a safari. Why not?

i have to save my money, we were going to go last christmas, but i didn’t want to be away on christmas day, so when i have enough money, even if it’s not ‘till i’ve got my own kids, i do plan on going on safari,

looks like this one will actually get completed!

we’re travelling over to kenya for christmas and i think we’re getting a 5-day safari.

will be insane waking up christmas day in the middle of africa without a turkey or a christmas tree..but i could use a change.

Well worth it 2 years ago

I’ve done this several times in Kenya and once in South Africa. It’s fantastic to see animals in the wild – so much more “real” than a zoo. Though I like cats and loved seeing (for example) lion cubs with their pride my favourite experience was with hippos. We stayed one night in a reserve about halfway between Nairobi and Mombassa. Our tents (with bathrooms and real beds – luxurious tents!) were next to a large stream leading to the lake the hippos spent their days in. At around 5am we sat on our verandah and watched as around 30 hippos, in single file apart from the mothers with calves, lumbered and splashed their way past.
