TLOTR is mythology. Of course it’s exciting, beautiful, moving, predictable, patriarchal, violent, and racist. You love it because it’s those things. And you love imagining a world without the last 3.

Thanks to the horrors of work, I’m now almost done with TTT. What’s really funny is that I got to the Mere of Dead Faces right when I started doing the day shift across the Bay, and so for part of my way I’m walking through the marshy parts of the Peninsula before dawn, and there was enough moonlight for me to see the mist coming off a lake I cross by bridge, and I’m all like, “Aaaaah! Spirit candles! Smeagol says don’t look!” :D

I hate to admit it but I hadn’t read this at all until after the movies came out. Well, at least until after the first one.
So far, I’ve read it 4 times and currently midway on my 5th. My husband and daughter got a copy for me for Mother’s day, right before my husband left for a year in Iraq. Thank goodness he’s made it safely home since then.
I finally saw what some people were up in arms about, leaving out the majority of the Ent story and switching character’s actions. For me, I’d have liked to see Sam come back and heal the village. BUT.. Not every detail could make it into a movie that could be produced nowadays. I mean, we’ve got 9 hours of it in the theatrical version, right? Plus a bit more with the extra on the dvd versions.
I think overall the movie was pretty darn faithful to the words and quite captured the spirit of the book.

It was the 3rd time, and I’m realizing that the more times I read it the easier it turns to do it again. It won’t be the last…

I’ve read it twice already, but it was years ago, so there are lots of things I’ve forgotten.
