How I did it: The main motivator for this goal was the fact that it was a requirement for a class project. Without a concrete due date & class time to work on it, it would have been really difficult to find the time to work on this project.
Our assignment was to design a cohesive typeface in Illustrator. We did not make it a functional (ie. "type-able") typeface – which I was disappointed in at first, but after seeing how much work goes into the character design alone, I can't imagine how much work it would be to program all the characters' relationships to each other (although... I would love to program a typeface someday!)
Here were the steps I took to design my typeface:
- Research. We had to chose a mood for our typeface before we even started the design process. I looked for calligraphy and handwriting samples, as well as images of Cyrillic letterforms and cranberry trees to base my designs on.
- Sketches. So many sketches. I did mine on graph paper, which helped immensely when it came to scanning/tracing my sketches digitally.
- Drawing. I brought my scanned sketches into Illustrator and traced them with a pen tool. I started with one letter, and recycled elements of it to create the other letters. This helps keep your typeface cohesive (and saves you from a lot of extra work!) For example, I started with an uppercase K, and copy/pasted segments of it to create the uppercase B, D, P, R, V, and W.
- Revising. This is the "I want to pull out all my hair" part. No matter how much you refine your letterforms, there is ALWAYS more tweaking to be done. If it weren't for the project deadline, I probably still be revising it right now!

How I did it: I was working at this magazine Neo2, it was exiting as I was still a Design student although the sort of design they did wasn't very much related with my mayor wich is Information Design, it was actually the oposite to most principles of what I was being thought but still I loved the experience as it showed me what not to become in a very fun and sweet way, so I while having fun, I did this type.
