So I guess this goal would become obsolete… anyone wanna buy some pretty swish APEC 5 blades?

Well, despite the general “I don’t want to kill myself” the reason why I consider this to be so imperative is because of the potential for getting arrested.
The worst “non-stopping” incident I had was in Nice, where I was roller-blading down a very slight incline and about to merge into some traffic. So I flung myself against the first motionless obstacle, which turned out to be a police car. With the police in it. Giving me really really evil looks.
One of the safest and best ways to learn how to stop on rollerblades is to find an open parking lot or garage that has some sort of banister or railing on an edge. Skate away from the railing, and then turn and skate back towards it.
As you approach the railing, practice using your brake to stop. If you don’t manage to stop, at least you can grab onto the railing. Eventually, you’ll be able to stop well before you reach the railing. At that point, increase the speed at which you go, lather, rinse, and repeat.
