You act like they are strange or difficult to come by. They happen all the time to everyone. If you’ve ever thought to yourself that something was really coincidental, you just experienced synchronicity.

It was very weird though, when this first happened to me, i think it made me feel really out of place in the world.
lob counting down to my son's play production...
when I experience synchronicity! All is well in my world!
Synchronicities are happening in my life even before I knew that they were called like that.
Recent example: my mobile rings “always look on the bright side of life” for some time. I like the song (Life of Brian), it just cheers me up. Someone called me in the car, I hear the song, look aside and a car with “Life is bright” written on it passes me. It’s not a song that it in the top 10 at the moment, but the next day I hear it on television.
One day later I talk to my neighbour, and about something that happened to me I tell him “But don’t worry, I see it positively”. He smiles at me: “Yeah, always look on the bright side of life, right?” Indeed, dear neighbour, indeed.
When things like this happen, my heart jumps up a little and I just feel like smiling.
This often happens when I am reading and traveling at the same time. For instance I was reading Steve Erickson’s Rubicon Beach while riding a bus down Wilshire. One of the characters reached the East edge of Wilshire and Western at the same time that my bus came to a stop at the light on the West edge of Wilshire and Western. I could imagine us peering across at each other.
Attributing meaning and personal connections to improbable events, discerning patterns which either do not exist or are the projections of our fears, desires and behavior – this can transform such benign and delightful coincidences into “signs,” “miracles,” or other more dangerous triggers for paranoid and psychotic thinking. While this probably shouldn’t worry most people (who have socially acceptable pathologies), I have seen some of my friend’s lives ruined by obsessively seeking synchronicity and hidden meaning.
Perhaps synchronicity is not representative of our collective unconscious, but rather, our collective psychosis. Strange that apothenia might be a coping mechanism for dealing with the alienating nature of the modern urban environment, though this could be another piece of the puzzle of why we see a dramatic increase in the incidence of schizophrenia in city centers.
I experienced exceptional synchronicity the other day in a borders. I was in a period of career crisis, and had just taken the myers-briggs personality indicator. someone had mentioned that there were books on careers based on the MBTI out there, and while I was wandering through the bookstore on my way to a different section, the book What’s your type of career FELL out of the shelf and into me…and there were two of them shrinkwrapped together with one tag, so through some sticking it to corporate amerikkka, I got one for free. it was pretty amazing.
So, now that I’ve started writing/talking about my frustrations and dreams, suddenly things are moving very fast.
I took my students to participate in an honor choir festival last weekend at my alma mater. While I was up there, I had planned on chatting with my old voice teacher about what steps I could take. Very cool. However, not only did I chat with him, but also wound up bumping into 4 of my other VERY significant professors from IC. When I talked about my recent struggles, they literally ALL said the same thing: “What about teaching at a college?”
Whoa!
Furthermore, while I was chatting with the associate dean of the music school, he actually INVITED ME TO “DO LUNCH” to personally help me sort through things. This is one busy guy!
Double Whoa!
And here’s the real kicker: On a whim, I had briefly introduced myself to one of the festival choral conductors who happened to do his doctorate at FSU, which has one of the best choral programs in the country. My conducting idol, Andre Thomas, works there. The conductor of the festival choir, Dr. Kevin Fenton, invited me to email him to chat more about the program. I figured, “why not?” this afternoon and emailed him, and didn’t expect a response for a few days. He emailed me back within a few hours, and said he would forward my email to none other than Dr. Andre Thomas!
Triple whoa!
Life is good….

I even keep a book of listings of whenever it happens.
My wife and I just look at each other and laugh when it happens now. While my mom was visiting for a few days we told her about it and when she started experiencing it she couldn’t believe it.
It’s a lot of fun, especially when it seems to snowball and every single moment is just one synchronicity after another.

they like to strike after either a powerful spiritual experience or after talking about things connected to the ether…according to most sources i read, synchronicities are little cosmic thumbs up, letting you know you’re on the right path, that everything’s okay
i rarely go a day anymore without having one or twelve
