Feeling my way around  — 1 week ago

I had gotten a comment on my previous entry on this goal, but it seem that the person who left it has since deleted their account. This is a shame, since I wanted to thank that person for their thoughts regarding Christianity.

Christianity is definitely on the table for me. I have managed to get over my prejudices against that faith that were based on the strange denominational cold war that went on in our house when I was a child. (I am sure interfaith marriages work for a lot of people, but not so much in our house when I was growing up—and my parents were just different kinds of Christians. What would the tension have been like if they’d been completely different religions? Eep!)

I am actually very conservative on a lot of things, so traditional monotheistic faiths are really ok with me.

Zen journey  — 1 month ago

I’ve been reading about Buddhism, writing Haiku, and doing yoga. This doesn’t count as “finding a religion”, but at least it’s a step. Next stop, local Japanese gardens on Saturday for a retreat from suburb life.

I have crossed paths with a trascendentalist belief system and I am convinced, but I feel no different. Although it is not a religion persay I still it finds a reason for my existence. But I am at a loss at what happens to my mind when I die. So I will search on for a more solid way of life

A rabbi recently told me that my spirituality now will be different than my spirituality 20 years from now. I am searching now, but I will always be searching. I don’t think Judaism is right for me, after about 7 years of learning and experiencing the faith. It felt right at one time, but I feel like I’ve grown into needing something else, something more earth-centered. I’m looking into neo-pagan ideas, but we’ll see where that leads.

The dreaded question  — 6 months ago

I went to a new doctor today, and as part of the process of getting integrated into their system, I was asked about religion. Twice. The first time, I was asked by the lady who was putting my information into the computer. She didn’t ask what religion I was, but rather if I wanted to declare one. I declined, but I felt bad about it. The second time was on a medical history form, and I just left it blank.

I would love to declare a religion. I believe in God, after all, and I’d like to have a faith community to belong to. I am just afraid that if I pick one and put it on a form like that, I’ll flake out after a while and have to change my answer. (That’s the awful but honest truth of the matter.)

I am so tired of wandering.

I heart Islam  — 6 months ago

Worth doing!

Islam is a beautiful religion. I have been a mulsima for about 4 years and I am raising my children in this religion. I think anyone should learn more about it, even if you decide not to become a muslim, it will show you what about 1 in every 4 people in this world today believe. Islam means peace in English. Muslim means “one who submits his or her will to God” and Allah is just Arabic for God, the same God of Abraham that we read about in the Bible. The main text of Islam is the Quaran. It is the word of God like the bible, but it has never been translated or changed in any way. Thats why we read it in Arabic even though I’m American. I think you can buy one in English online to get the idea of what it says in Arabic. There are rules to handling an Arabic Quaran respectfully, but they do not apply when the text is over 50% another language, so no one should feel intimidated to read this important document. It tells about Jesus also, his name in Arabic is Isa, peace be upon him. After the Quaran, we learn from hadith. I saw alot of fake ahadith quoted online and I saw alot of misinformation about our religion also. If you can find an accurate source of information, I’m sure it will at least be interesting to look into. I was raised in no religion and told there was no God by my parents. So I understand the lost feeling of having no religion. I can never express how much better my life and everything in it is now. I came to Islam after I read the Old Testiment and then the New Testiment and then the Quaran in order cover to cover like you might read any books. After that I understood alot of things I had never considered before. It didn’t take very long and it is not that big of a deal. The last thing I have to say is that every person has a right to become a muslim if they choose, from any nation or original religion. I personally recommend this religion, especially to other women, and I will inshallah, make duaa (pray) for all 100 people in this list to find a religion even if it is not Islam. But Islam rocks and is the best ever forever anyway, ameen!

I'm struggling.  — 8 months ago

I spent 15 years of my life (the first 15) being told to go to church and pray. I tried this and around my 15th birthday I found out that I just could not believe in a God or a higher being.
I feel like all there is is life and science, I want to have a soul and believe in something. I feel like I know there’s nothing there and it’s stupidly optimistic to believe otherwise. I want that to change and I want it to change soon.

Step one....  — 8 months ago

Buddhism seems the most logical way to go because I love it’s teachings. I just bought a book on the basics and can’t wait to start reading. I might not adopt it as a religion in a formal way, I may just apply the philosophies to my life.
