I have seen the northern lights on t.v. and have heard people talk about it. On television it looks like the most incredible natural pheonomena. I can’t imagine how it would be live, but I’ve got to find out.
How to watch the northern lights
How I did it: Last december my friend found a good deal for going to Iceland in March. We arrived there at the 5th of March and because the weather conditions were great we decided to take a tour right that night.
The sun activity was very low, so there were no curtains of light, just a stripe of green emerging, disappearing and re-emerging again. It was really awesome to see (I thought the conditions would be crappy and I wouldn't see it). But I would love to see it again when the sun activity is higher. The tourguide said there would be more activity again in 2010.
Lessons & tips:
- We took a tour. That's not exactly necessary, you really just have to get out of the lights of Reykjavik. So if you have a car or something, hire it with a bunch of people, you're better off. Because the lights weren't very strong they were very hard to spot though and I was kind of happy the tourguide pointed them out.
- When you take the tour, take into account the tourguides really have very little to tell you or point out besides the lights, because it's dark out. So what's told gets repeated a few times and there's a lot of japping about how pretty the outline of the mountains is in the dark or how bright Venus is.

I may possibly get to do this, and on or around my birthday no less. A friend and I are going to iceland a few days at the start of March. I’ve got my fingers crossed the timing’ll be good. I’d really love to see the northern lights… It’d make a brilliant birthday present…
This happened back when I was a kid, prolly at least 15 years ago, maybe more. We were at a family reunion, all sitting around the campfire and my cousin was randomly playing the guitar. She was a few lines into “Amazing Grace’ when the Northern Lights appeared. They were beautiful. It was a night I’ll never forget.
