Getting rid!
I’ve just cancelled my Sky TV, and so when it runs out, I’ll no longer be able to receive any TV signal. Obviously I’ll still watch DVDs for film nights, and geeky sci-fi series. But I’m so pleased to be able to get rid of the general TV, as it sucks my life away!
I’m planning to spend my extra time reading, chatting to friends and going to art classes..

Firstly it cost me a good few quid… it wouldn’t be worth a lot to sell on 2nd hand because its not a flat one, its huge and old fashioned.
Then theres the issue of film nights. On wednesdays my mates come round to eat & watch films. DVD’s are simply not the same viewed on my computer.
When my TV addiction becomes too much I plan to take the plug off and hide it in the corner. Throw a blanket over it or something.

After giving away my TV, I have found that I have plenty of time to do all the things I want to do during my evenings and weekends: cook healthy meals, go to taekwondo classes, go running, get groceries, read the news and books, talk with friends… I don’t miss the idiot box one bit. Now, technically, my computer can perform as a TV (and much more), but eliminating the temptation to passively watch mindless programming is a decision I don’t regret.

My husband and I gave up on cable and now only use the TV for the occasional movie. I have more free time and do no feel tied to any sort of schedule. If you do this and are going through withdrawal you will find there are plenty of sites that have movies online. ABC, SciFi, and others have streaming video and netflix is a great option with their streaming movies. Of course all that defeats the idea of giving up the TV. But it is good not to pay cable and to have flexibility in your schedule. Good luck!

I gave it away about a year ago to my brother who was going to college. It’s okay because the only television show I watch is South Park and it is available on iTunes. So I no longer need to even own anything except this laptop when it comes to entertainment media. I have most of Seinfeld on DVD and a little King of the Hill. The only other shows I would watch are Futurama and Law and Order: SVU. But those shows are just to fill a void in my life. A void I now consider filling with more enlightening activities. Like meditation, perhaps. Good luck to everyone!

It would be just so weird living without a TV, it seems. It is like being disconnected from the world. At least that is how we are all programmed to think. I am tired of being pitched useless products on every commercial break in this loud voice that treats the average American like an idiot. Trying to wow us by using bright colors, flashing lights, and cutting-edge graphics. “Drink Coke.” Sorry, but I would rather die than drink a bottle of your corn syrup water.
I am not saying all television is evil, but I feel like most of it is. If I like a show enough, I’ll buy it on DVD. No need to waste time watching commercials or flipping channels looking for something suitable to watch. I value my time immensely, and it just seems a shame to waste hours of my valuable time in front of a screen watching others do things I could be doing. What kind of a life is that?

Well…I did it. I got rid of the TV in my studio. Glad I did it and it frees up more space for more creative endeavors.
