WAY too much technology to learn at work, and if I’m going to tinker with web application frameworks in my own time, realistically it’s going to be PHP, because that’s more likely to be commercially applicable…
Rails is a sexy skill, no doubt, and would let me play with the cool kids, but for the moment I’m going to given this one up.

I installed rails on my trusty powerbook. It really was very easy to get at least something done even though I know almost nothing about ruby (and as i got to learn that language i got a new goal). As i’ve promised a friend of mine to make his election site, for finnish parliamentary elections, i’m now considering using rails for the task.

Well, for the past three months I’ve been building my first real Rails application.
It’s a podcasting community site – http://www.pluggd.com. I can’t believe how far I’ve come in such a short period of time. Rails completely rocks. I’ve really learned a ton and have enjoyed using Rails. I’ve been fortunate to receive a good deal of help from other developers in the Rails community.
I can’t wait to continue to add interesting features to the site. My mind is full of ideas. Naturally, I’m always happy to hear ideas other folks might have.

Oh. It was so simple. I did not even have to whip out the reference, I could just guess at some syntax, and I got it right at the second try.
The Locomotive server start/stopper is very nice. From it you can click a button that says “Edit with TextMate”. And then that’s what you do. It opens the relevant folder as a TextMate project, and you’re on.
It’s like candy. So I want more.

I’ll wait until I see a job that requires Rails in my day to day life before I pick up this toolset.

After some projects and with hindsight: It’s as good as they tell you, and it is getting better all the time

This week I ordered two of the popular Ruby Books, Agile Web Development with Rails and Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers’ Guide. I’ve read great reviews on both of these books. I’m hoping this small step will lead me towards my goal of creating a site with Ruby on Rails.
